In summer of turmoil, subdued 'fear' gauges make markets uneasy
Financial markets' fear gauges are not flashing red at a time of serious global turmoil, stirring investor doubts over whether the indexes are mispricing current and future turbulence. BEFORE THE BELL
U.S. stock index futures retreated as lawmakers geared up to debate a coronavirus relief deal to limit the economic damage from the pandemic. European shares fell due to underwhelming quarterly earnings from luxury goods makers. Japan's Nikkei closed lower. Gold slipped after scaling record highs, as the dollar gained ahead of a two-day Federal Reserve meeting. Oil prices dipped. Consumer confidence index data is on the economic radar. Visa is due to report later in the day.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Results
D.R. Horton Inc (DHI). The homebuilder reported a better-than-expected quarterly revenue and orders, as record-low mortgage rates and a shift towards suburban living caused by the coronavirus crisis helped boost sales. D.R. Horton said orders jumped 38% to 21,519 homes in the third quarter ended June 30, beating the Wall Street's estimate of 14,853 units. Home sales at D.R. Horton rose 10.5% to 17,642 homes in the third quarter topping analysts' expectation of 17,068 units. Net income attributable to D.R. Horton rose about 33% to $630.7 million, or $1.72 per share, in the quarter, helped by a $38.1 million income tax benefit. Total revenue rose to $5.39 billion, from $4.91 billion.
McDonald's Corp (MCD). The company reported a bigger-than-expected drop in global same-store sales as the burger chain's restaurants across the world were shut because of the COVID-19 pandemic, limiting operations to only drive-thru and delivery. Global same-store sales fell 23.9% for the second quarter ended June 30, dragged down by big international markets including the United Kingdom, France and Latin America. Revenue fell 30.5% to $3.76 billion, but beat the estimate of $3.68 billion. Net income fell to $483.8 million, or 65 cents per share, from $1.52 billion, or $1.97 per share, a year earlier.

In Other News
Amazon.com Inc (AMZN). The e-commerce giant will begin fast and free deliveries of groceries in London, with the aim of rolling out the service across the United Kingdom by the year-end as the coronavirus-driven lockdown boosted online sales of essentials. The company said it has added the 'Fresh' service to its UK website to deliver meat, produce, snacks and other household essentials in two-hour windows for orders above $52, with no shipping charges for its 'Prime' members.
AstraZeneca Plc (AZN). The drugmaker's diabetes treatment has shown promise in a late-stage trial to help to slow chronic kidney disease, putting it on track for possible expanded approvals ahead of rival drugs. The company said that the treatment - Farxiga - which is used for the most common form of diabetes, helped to improve renal function or reduced the risk of death compared with a placebo in diabetic and non-diabetic patients in a study. Farxiga had sales of $1.54 billion in 2019, making it among AstaZeneca's top five treatments in terms of revenue.
Copa Holdings SA (CPA). Panama's Copa Airlines said on Monday it would resume flights on Sept. 4, with about 3% of its capacity, if the Central American country's government does not again extend a ban on international travel. The airline said it set that date for the restart to "maintain some flexibility" in the event the travel ban is extended and to minimize the impact on passengers if adjustments to itineraries are needed. "If we resume operations in September, we project that we will do so with approximately 3% of all existing operations prior to the impact of COVID-19," the airline told Reuters.
Facebook Inc (FB). The company has secured a court order to temporarily stop EU antitrust regulators' information requests related to their investigations into the company's data and online marketplace, according to a General Court ruling. The European Union request "is suspended until the order terminating the present proceedings for interim relief is made," the Luxembourg-based court said in a judgment dated July 24. Separately, Brazil's antitrust watchdog is asking Facebook to explain the fee structure for its short-lived payments service launched in June in partnership with card processor Cielo, according to a document seen by Reuters.
HSBC Holdings PLC (HSBC). A Chinese government-backed website took aim at HSBC, accusing the Asia-focussed lender of "maliciously" playing a role in the arrest of Huawei Technologies' chief financial officer. "The role of HSBC in the Meng Wanzhou incident is already clear. HSBC's credibility has also been wiped out," said the commentary posted on the site backed by the State Council Information Office and the China International Publishing Group. "In the U.S. government's political pursuit of Huawei, HSBC was the one who 'handed the knife'," it said in a column written under the byline Tang Hua, and signed by three editors.
ING Groep NV (ING). The Dutch bank said it expects to write off about $351.9 million from the value of its past acquisitions, as the Dutch bank was badly affected from the economic fallout of the coronavirus crisis. ING said it will book the goodwill impairment, which does not affect its capital ratios, in its second-quarter results due on Aug. 6. A company spokesman declined to name the business units involved, but said the impairment is related to "multiple acquisitions, some from a long time ago".
Intel Corp (INTC). The chipmaker said on Monday Chief Engineering Officer Murthy Renduchintala is departing, part of a move in which a key technology unit will be separated into five teams. Intel said it is reorganizing its technology, systems architecture and client group. Its new leaders will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Bob Swan. Ann Kelleher, a 24-year Intel veteran, will lead development of 7-nanometer and 5-nanometer chip technology processes. Intel said Renduchintala will depart Aug. 3.
Match Group Inc (MTCH). The company on Monday named Jim Lanzone, former boss of CBS Interactive, as the new chief executive officer of its dating app Tinder. Lanzone, who most recently served as an executive-in-residence at Benchmark Capital, will succeed Elie Seidman, who is stepping down. Lanzone's appointment is effective Aug. 3 and he will report to Match Group CEO, Shar Dubey. Match Group is expected to report its second-quarter results next week.
Moderna Inc (MRNA) and Pfizer Inc (PFE). The drugmakers launched two 30,000-subject trials of COVID-19 vaccines that could clear the way for regulatory approval and widespread use by the end of this year, the companies said on Monday. Both vaccine candidates rely on a new technology that allows for faster development and manufacturing than traditional vaccine production methods but does not have an extensive track record. Moderna could have tens of millions of doses ready when and if the vaccine is deemed safe and effective, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Francis Collins told reporters on a call. Pfizer said that if the trial was successful, it could seek regulatory approval as soon as October and supply vaccines for 50 million patients, at two doses each, by the end of the year.
Oi SA em Recuperacao Judicial (OIBRc). Tim, Telefonica Brasil and America Movil's Claro on Monday night raised their bid to buy Oi SA's mobile assets out of bankruptcy for $3.21 billion. The new offer comes after Oi said it had begun exclusive talks with another potential buyer, called Highline do Brasil, a portfolio company of U.S. private equity firm Digital Colony. The companies added that their proposal also considers "the possibility of signing long-term contracts for the use of Oi Group’s infrastructure."
Rio Tinto PLC (RIO). The Anglo-Australian miner said on Monday it discovered gold-rich deposits at its Winu project in Western Australia and indicated the potential for a major new copper and gold mine in the region. The company said the new find in the Paterson Province, along with other positive drilling results nearby, points at potential for developing of multiple ore bodies within one system. Rio added it is targeting first production from Winu in 2023, subject to obtaining all necessary approvals.
Tailored Brands Inc (TLRD). The Men's Wearhouse owner said on Monday it could consider filing for bankruptcy as soon as in the third quarter, as the COVID-19 crisis continues to pummel sales. The company said a reduction in liquidity and failure to make an interest payment have raised doubts about its ability to continue as a going concern within a year. Tailored Brands had said that it had identified up to 500 stores for closure over time and expected to cut 20% of its corporate workforce. The apparel retailer had said it was no longer in compliance with an NYSE-listing criteria.
Tesla Inc (TSLA). The electric vehicle maker has launched a hiring spree in Shanghai with plans to bring on designers at its China studio and about 1,000 factory workers, job posts show, as the company ramps up production in the world's biggest auto market. The posts did not reveal how many designers Tesla planned to hire. The company also planned to hire 600 workers at stamping, bodywork, painting and assembly workshops in Shanghai, according to a separate job post by the Lingang local government. Another 150 workers were needed for quality checks, 200 for logistics work and 20 for security, it added.
Trip.com Group Ltd (TCOM). Chinese online travel giant Ctrip is in talks with potential investors about funding its delisting from Nasdaq because of rising U.S.-China tensions and the coronavirus-driven hit to its business, sources told Reuters. Ctrip's delisting discussions, which have not been reported previously, are at an early stage and are subject to change, cautioned the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter is not public. Ctrip's diversified ownership structure, however, would present a challenge to getting shareholders' backing for the delisting plans.
United Airlines Holdings Inc (UAL). The company has told two regional airlines, ExpressJet and CommutAir, that it will drop its contract with one, according to a pilot union letter reviewed by Reuters, in a potentially mortal blow to the losing carrier as the coronavirus pandemic guts demand. ExpressJet and CommutAir each work exclusively for United and the plan would mean one would lose its major source of revenue. "We've been clear for months now that we expect to be a smaller airline in response to the historic impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our business. That means we've cut our schedules and our costs across the operation – and we do anticipate it will continue to impact the relationships we have with our regional partners," United said.
Walmart Inc (WMT). India's Flipkart said it plans to offer 90-minute deliveries for groceries and home accessories, as the Walmart-owned online retailer goes head to head with Amazon in a key growth market for e-commerce. Flipkart said its hyperlocal service, dubbed Flipkart Quick, will also sell mobile phones and stationery items, taking it a step further than Amazon's quick-delivery service that mainly offers just groceries. Flipkart Quick will debut in select locations in Bengaluru, the company said, without specifying a launch date.
Westpac Banking Corp (WBK). The Australian lender said it gave updated information on more than 500,000 threshold transactions to Australia's financial crime regulator that it had not reported or were incomplete amid allegations it enabled millions of illegal payments. The company said that not all of the transactions of A$10,000 or more it provided the regulator may have breached anti-money laundering laws. Westpac said it provided about 175,000 transactions it had not reported and about 365,000 that it had but for which it may not have had complete or accurate information. It said it was still working with AUSTRAC and that the number of threshold transaction reports may change.

End game for oil? OPEC prepares for an age of dwindling demand
The coronavirus crisis may have triggered the long-anticipated tipping point in oil demand and it is focusing minds in OPEC. The pandemic drove down daily crude consumption by as much as a third earlier this year, at a time when the rise of electric vehicles and a shift to renewable energy sources were already prompting downward revisions in forecasts for long-term oil demand.

Hasbro Inc (HAS). JPMorgan cuts target price to $72 from $82, after the company's second-quarter earnings missed expectations.
Peloton Interactive Inc (PTON). KeyBanc raises target price to $74 from $70, expecting the company to report better than expected results, as people are choosing to avoid gyms amid COVID-19.
SAP SE (SAP). Cowen and Company raises target price to $165 from $150, saying though it finds the IPO of Qualtrics surprising, the management's explanation that it will provide more flexibility for the company makes sense.
Shopify Inc (SHOP). Jefferies raises target price to $1,120 from $725, expecting huge second-quarter revenue beat.

Wake-up call: Nasdaq stevige rebound, Europa moeite met dure euro

Goedemorgen
