Guy

Markt snapshot Wall Street

TOP NEWS
• U.S. layoffs remain elevated as weak demand persists after businesses reopened
Weak demand is forcing U.S. employers to lay off workers, keeping new applications for unemployment benefits extraordinarily high, even as businesses have reopened, buttressing views the labor market could take years to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits likely totaled a seasonally adjusted 1.3 million for the week ended June 20, down from 1.508 million in the prior week.
• Wirecard collapses owing creditors $4 billion
German payments company Wirecard collapsed after disclosing a massive financial hole in its books, leaving creditors owed nearly $4 billion facing an almost complete wipeout.
• Trump administration says Huawei, Hikvision backed by Chinese military
The Trump administration has determined that top Chinese firms, including telecoms equipment giant Huawei Technologies and video surveillance company Hikvision, are owned or controlled by the Chinese military, laying the groundwork for new U.S. financial sanctions.
• Chuck E. Cheese parent files for bankruptcy, another casualty of pandemic
Restaurant chain Chuck E. Cheese parent CEC Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, making it the latest casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic that has crushed entertainment and leisure industries globally.
• SoftBank is not 'SoftPunku' says CEO in defence of strategy
SoftBank Group Chief Executive Masayoshi Son mounted a defence of his investing decisions, saying the value of the Japanese conglomerate's holdings has recovered to pre-coronavirus outbreak levels.

BEFORE THE BELL
Wall Street futures fell and Asian markets ended in the red as coronavirus cases surged globally and IMF’s downgrade to economic projections dented hopes of economic recovery. European stocks rebounded due to gains in Lufthansa and Bayer shares. The dollar edged up as demand for safe-haven currencies improved. Oilprices dropped on record-high U.S. crude inventories. Gold edged lower. Data for GDP, durable goods orders and initial jobless claims are due for release later during the day.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Results
• BlackBerry Ltd (BB). The company reported quarterly revenue below Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, as demand for its QNX software used in cars was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic that severely bruised the auto industry. The company posted a surprise profit as it put a tight lid on costs by slashing marketing and related costs by $31 million in the quarter. Adjusted operating expense fell 22.7% to $150 million. Total revenue for the first quarter ended May 31 fell 16.6% to $206 million from a year earlier. Analyst had expected revenue of $214.1 million. Net loss widened to $636 million, or $1.14 per share, from $35 million, or 9 cents per share. Net loss includes impairment charge of $594 million related to its Spark reporting unit. Excluding items, the company reported a profit of 2 cents per share, while analysts were expecting a loss of 2 cents per share.

Deals Of The Day
• AbbVie Inc (ABBV). Japan's Sosei Group will collaborate with the company on a drug discovery partnership that could be worth up to $1 billion. The partnership will initially focus on the discovery of novel small molecules, targeting inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, the companies said in a news release. Sosei is eligible to receive up to $32 million in upfront and near-term milestone payments, along with future commercial milestones of up to $377 million, plus tiered royalties on sales. The companies will work to discover and commercialise medicines that modulate G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) targets.
• Crescent Acquisition Corp (CRSA). The special purpose acquisition firm said it would buy Australian fitness chain F45 Training in a deal that values the combined company at $845 million, including debt. F45, which counts actor Mark Wahlberg as one of its shareholders, has more than 1,900 franchises in 50 countries and is known for promoting group workouts without heavy equipment. The combined company will trade on the Nasdaq following the closure of the deal, which is expected in the third quarter of 2020, and will retain the F45 name, Crescent said in a statement on Wednesday.

In Other News
• Alphabet Inc (GOOGL). Google took a step to resolving its spat with publishers, saying it would pay some media groups in Australia, Brazil and Germany for high-quality content and expects to do more deals with others. The U.S. internet giant has for years tried to fend off demands for payment from news publishers worldwide in return for using their content, with European media groups among their fiercest critics. The new product will be available on Google News and Discover. Bender said Google would also offer to pay for free access for users to read paywalled articles on a publisher's site where available.
• Amazon.com Inc (AMZN). The retail giant is expanding its Australian operations with plans to build a warehouse in Sydney and is also scouting locations for a giant facility in Melbourne, the Australian Financial Review reported. Amazon's reported expansion plans come on the back of surging online sales as consumers shift to e-tailing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• California Resources Corp (CRC). The U.S. oil and gas producer last week paid interest due on an unsecured 2024 bond, about a month late, two people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. California Resources has been struggling with the sharp drop in oil prices and demand this year. It told investors last month it might not be able to continue operations without a debt restructuring. The semi-annual coupon payment on its $2.25 billion senior unsecured note, of which $144 million is outstanding, was due on May 15, according to Refinitiv Eikon data.
• Chevron Corp (CVX), ConocoPhillips (COP), Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM), Halliburton Co (HAL) & Phillips 66 (PSX). U.S. energy companies slammed the brakes on returning staff to their Houston offices as COVID-19 cases soared and top hospitals warned they could soon run out of beds for the most severely ill patients. Many energy firms qualify as essential, and therefore are free to staff normally, but the surge in illness and hospitalizations has large employers delaying or halting openings. Halliburton delayed for two weeks a second-phase of its return-to-work plan, a spokeswoman said. Chevron also has delayed its reopening plans for further evaluation, said spokesman Sean Comey. About 5% of its Houston office staff and about 2% of its San Ramon, California, workforce are in their offices now, he said. Exxon Mobil, Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips returned some white-collar workers to their campuses in May or this month. Phillips 66 said the vast majority of its staff had returned and would remain working from their offices.
• Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCAU) The company expects car sales in Italy to fall by at least 35% this year due to the new coronavirus crisis, Pietro Gorlier, FCA's chief operating officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa said. The first half of the year saw a 50% year-on-year drop with sales close to zero in March and April, Gorlier said, adding that there were still 450,000 vehicles in stock. Separately, Peugeot maker PSA's boss Carlos Tavares said he was confident the merger of the French carmaker and Fiat Chrysler would go ahead as planned and yield synergies of at least 3.7 billion euros.
• Ford Motor Co (F) & Vodafone Group PLC (VOD). Ford Motor has signed a deal with Vodafone to install a private 5G network at the car maker's electric-vehicle (EV) battery facility in UK's Essex, the companies said in a joint statement. The project is part of a 65-million-pound ($80.87 million) investment in 5G backed by the UK government, according to Ford and Vodafone, and would be among the first of its kind in Britain.
• Occidental Petroleum Corp (OXY). The company has asked for bids by July 1 for properties it is selling in Wyoming and Colorado, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon said on Wednesday. The company has been struggling with debt taken on in last year's $38 billion acquisition of Anadarko Petroleum, an ill-timed bet on rising shale oil prices ahead of a market crash. Wyoming's State Lands and Investment Board plans to hold a public hearing early next week to decide if it will bid on the surface and mineral properties, Gordon said.
• Ryanair Holdings PLC (RYAAY). Europe's biggest budget airline will challenge the European Commission's approval of German rival Lufthansa's bailout, a senior Ryanair executive said. "It (Lufthansa) needs it as a war chest to fight off competition, it doesn't need it to survive," Juliusz Gomorek, Ryanair's chief legal officer told reporters.
• Tesla Inc (TSLA). The company plans to build a battery research and manufacturing facility in Fremont, California, to be operated around the clock, under a project dubbed Roadrunner, documents from the city government showed. The plan signals the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker's efforts to make its own automotive batteries, EVs' most expensive components. Tesla, which said it currently has a "small-scale" battery manufacturing operation in Fremont, applied for city government approval to build an expanded battery operation. It estimated construction of the project, including the installation of all manufacturing equipment, can be completed in around 3 months.
• Walt Disney Co (DIS). The company said the reopening of theme parks and resort hotels in California will be delayed until Disneyland receives approval from state officials, as the state is hit by a huge spike in new coronavirus cases. Disney had originally planned to reopen the Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park on July 17. Disney had received pushback from unions representing 17,000 workers at its Disneyland Resort in Southern California, who said they were not convinced the theme park would be safe enough to reopen by the company's target date. It has also come under pressure to delay the July 11 reopening of its Orlando, Florida-based Walt Disney World.
• Yandex NV (YNDX). The Russian internet giant has doubled the size of its new share offering to $400 million, it said, which combined with private placements will raise $1 billion to finance acquisitions and growth. Yandex said that it has issued 8,121,827 new Class A shares, pricing each at $49.25 and effectively doubling the public offering to $400 million. Concurrent with the public offering, Yandex plans to sell another 12,182,739 Class A shares, to be equally taken up by VTB Capital, the investment business arm of VTB bank, and two other companies controlled by three Russian businessmen.

Frustration, fear and family: lockdowns test investment bankers
Lockdowns are sharpening the knives in the cut-throat world of M&A banking. Stuck at home, armed only with a phone and a laptop, senior advisors are finding out just how strong their relationships with clients really are while frustrated juniors are left to crunch numbers in the shadows, deprived of the personal access to the rainmakers who could give their careers a boost.

• Del Taco Restaurants Inc (TACO). Piper Sandler raises target price to $6 from $5, following the company's pre-announcement of second quarter sales results.
• Ollie's Bargain Outlet Holdings Inc (OLLI). Jefferies raises target price to $112 from $105, believing that the company’s deal flow is strong, financial position is healthy, and has scalable infrastructure in place to support its growth.
• RingCentral Inc (RNG). BTIG raises target price to $325 from $275, to reflect rising sentiment and continued momentum in the company’s cloud communications space.

Wake-up call: Stevige terugval Wall Street, Europa sluit onder steun

Goedemorgen

Guy Boscart

Patval do 25 jun.

SpeedyG do 25 jun.
