Novavax's COVID vaccine rollout in EU off to a slow start -data
Demand for the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Novavax has been underwhelming in the European Union's main countries in the early rollout, so far undermining hopes that it could convince vaccine sceptics to get a shot.

BEFORE THE BELL
Wall Street futures were higher as investors clung to hopes of Russia-Ukraine peace talks, with investors also looking forward to the Federal Reserve policy meeting this week where it is widely expected to raise interest rates. European shares were up, with Volkswagen climbing after the carmaker doubled its operating profit. Asian equities ended on a mixed note. The dollar slipped, but was still near a five-year high versus Japanese yen. Oil prices fell as a surge in COVID-19 cases in China spooked the markets. Gold prices dropped as the U.S. Treasury yields hit their highest in a month.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Archer-Daniels-Midland Co: Global farm commodities traders Cargill Inc and Archer-Daniels-Midland said on Friday they were scaling back business activities in Russia but would continue to operate "essential" food facilities there. Agriculture firms have been slower than oil companies and retailers to announce they are curtailing Russian operations following Moscow's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, which has been near universally condemned around the world. "Food is a basic human right and should never be used as a weapon," Cargill, a U.S.-based privately held company, said in a statement. Cargill Rival ADM said in a statement its footprint in Russia was very limited and it would "scale down operations in Russia not related to the production and transport of essential food commodities and ingredients." ADM has an arm of its WILD flavorings business in Russia and a 50% stake in Aston Foods and Food Ingredients, a sweeteners and starches business.

AstraZeneca Plc: The company said the U.S. drug regulator declined to approve its asthma medicine, Fasenra, for treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, a condition characterised by benign growths that cause pain and stuffiness. The London-listed drugmaker said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had issued a complete response letter following AstraZeneca's application to extend use of the treatment and requested additional clinical data from it. Fasenra was AstraZeneca's first respiratory biologic and raked in $1.26 billion in sales in 2021, jumping 33% from the previous year. It belongs to a class of medicines called monoclonal antibodies and is used against severe asthma. The treatment rivals GlaxoSmithKline's Nucala and Teva's Cinqair from the same drug class, while AstraZeneca has also developed a newer medicine, Tezspire, with Amgen which would compete with Fasenra. An approval would have challenged Sanofi's Dupixent and Novartis's Xolair, the two biologic respiratory drugs that have so far won approval to treat chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis.

AT&T Inc: The company’s financial relationship with One America News is deeper than previously known and will continue even after DirecTV drops the far-right network from its satellite service next month, a new court filing shows. The court filing, made as part of a lawsuit OAN filed against AT&T and DirecTV last week, reveals an exclusive contract for an AT&T subsidiary to sell commercials for OAN. “These allegations are completely without merit,” AT&T said. The telecommunications giant denied OAN’s claim that the political beliefs of executives influenced the decision to drop the network. DirecTV called the lawsuit “baseless” and said it was “confident that we have fully complied both with the law and our agreement.”

Berkshire Hathaway Inc: The company on Friday urged the rejection of four shareholder proposals recommending that it replace Warren Buffett as chairman, report on its plans to handle climate risk and reduce greenhouse gases, and improve diversity. The company, run by Buffett since 1965, also said the 91-year-old received $373,204 in compensation for 2021, down from $380,328 a year earlier, comprising his usual $100,000 salary plus personal and home security. Though Buffett's salary is low for a chief executive officer of a major company, his 16.2% Berkshire stake comprises most of his $117.9 billion net worth, which Forbes magazine said makes him the world's fifth-richest person. Berkshire has said Abel would become CEO and Buffett's son Howard Buffett would become non-executive chairman if Warren Buffett could not continue in those roles. One shareholder proposal, from the National Legal and Policy Center, said those roles are "greatly diminished" because Buffett holds both, weakening governance, and an independent director should become chairman. According to the filing, Berkshire's directors agree that is a good idea, but only after Buffett is no longer CEO.

Biogen Inc: Patient groups are mounting a public pressure campaign aimed at persuading the U.S. government to loosen proposed restrictions on new Alzheimer's treatments, spending millions of dollars on television and local advertisements that began running during the Sunday morning political shows. The unusual ad campaign comes after a high-profile disagreement between government health agencies over who should have access to Biogen’s Aduhelm, the first treatment for the mind-wasting disease to be approved in 20 years. The drugs being considered remove amyloid plaques from the brain of people with Alzheimer's. The agency has until April 11 to issue a final coverage decision. USAgainstAlzheimer's, one of the largest U.S.-based groups representing patients with the disease, said it is funding ads in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas targeting the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the White House and Congress. "We want to put a face on the individuals that are affected by this Medicare decision," said USAgainstAlzheimer's Chairman George Vradenburg.

Deutsche Bank AG: The company which faced stinging criticism from some investors and politicians for its ongoing ties to Russia, said on Friday in a surprise move that it would wind down its business in the country. Deutsche had resisted pressure to sever ties, arguing that it needed to support multinational firms doing business in Russia. But on Friday evening in Frankfurt, the bank suddenly reversed course. "We are in the process of winding down our remaining business in Russia while we help our non-Russian multinational clients in reducing their operations," the bank said. "There won't be any new business in Russia," Deutsche said. Bill Browder, an investor who has spent years campaigning to expose corruption in Russia, said that Deutsche Bank staying was "completely at odds with the international business community and will create backlash, lost reputation and business in the West." "I would be surprised if they are able to maintain this position as the situation in Ukraine continues to deteriorate," Browder told Reuters earlier on Friday.

Ford Motor Co: Volkswagen said it has deepened its e-mobility partnership with Ford under which the U.S. carmaker will produce a second electric vehicle for the European market based on its German rival's platform. As part of the expanded cooperation, Ford will double its planned volume of vehicles to be produced based on Volkswagen's modular electric-drive platform, known as MEB, to 1.2 million units over a six-year time frame. "Profitability and speed are now crucial for finally achieving the breakthrough of e-mobility in Europe. We are tackling both together with Ford," Volkswagen management board member Thomas Schmall said. "Today's agreement will further accelerate the electrification of the two companies." Ford's first model to use the MEB platform will be an all-electric crossover, to be produced at Ford's Cologne plant from 2023.

HSBC Holdings Plc: The company announced it has agreed to sell its branch operations in Greece to local bank Pancreta Bank, as the lender further sharpens its focus on its biggest market Asia. HSBC said the in-principle agreement to sell its Greek retail business by its HSBC Continental Europe unit was expected to complete in the first half of 2023. HSBC, which has operated in Greece since 1981, has assets of around 2 billion euros in the country. The bank said it served 90,000 retail customers and around 500 business customers through 15 branches in Greece. All 320 employees of the retail business will transfer to Pancreta as part of the sale once completed. The deal is subject to consultation with unions and regulatory approval, HSBC added

KKR & Co Inc: Telecom Italia said on Sunday it would start formal talks with KKR to assess the U.S. fund's potential 10.8 billion euro offer for Italy's biggest phone group, almost four months after the approach. Telecom Italia (TIM), however, said it would also explore a possible tie-up with state-backed broadband rival Open Fiber as it pursues an in-house revamp new CEO Pietro Labriola presented in early March. Discussions with KKR to assess "the attractiveness and deliverability" of its proposal would also seek to define the "length and scope" of confirmatory due diligence the private equity firm had requested before formalising its non-binding bid, TIM said. KKR aims to secure control of the debt-laden former phone monopoly, delist it and attempt to relaunch it by carving out its network infrastructure assets, sources have previously said. Labriola, whose appointment was sponsored by TIM's largest investor Vivendi which deems KKR's initial offer as too low, has presented his own plan to revive the company. KKR's bid of 0.505 euros a share is a 75% premium to the stock's closing level on Friday, compared with a 46% premium when it was first announced. The U.S. fund has said it wanted the backing of both TIM and the government. KKR is already involved with TIM, having paid 1.8 billion euros last year for a 37.5% stake in its secondary network.

Lockheed Martin Corp: Germany will purchase F-35 fighter jets built by Lockheed Martin to replace its ageing Tornado aircraft, according to two government sources, with one of the sources saying Berlin aims to buy up to 35 of the stealth jets. The Tornado is the only German jet capable of carrying U.S. nuclear bombs, stored in Germany, in case of a conflict. But the air force has been flying the jet since the 1980s, and Berlin is planning to phase it out between 2025 and 2030. The F-35 buy will be a blow for Boeing, whose F-18 was favored by former German defence minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to replace the Tornado. The decision could also upset France. Paris has watched Germany's deliberations over the F-18 or more advanced F-35, concerned a deal could undermine the development of a joint Franco-German fighter jet that is supposed to be ready in the 2040s.

Merck & Co & AstraZeneca Plc: British drugmaker AstraZeneca said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved its cancer drug, jointly developed with U.S.-based Merck, as a treatment for patients with early-stage breast cancer with certain mutations. AstraZeneca said on Friday the drug, Lynparza, was approved for patients with a form of genetically mutated high-risk early-stage breast cancer called BRCA-mutated HER2-negative, who have already been treated with chemotherapy either before or after surgery. The approval was based on results from a late-stage study in which the drug showed statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in invasive disease-free survival, reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer recurrences and second cancers or death by 42% compared with placebo.

Meta Platforms Inc: The Facebook owner said on Sunday that it is further narrowing its content moderation policy for Ukraine to prohibit calls for the death of a head of state, according to an internal company post seen by Reuters. "We are now narrowing the focus to make it explicitly clear in the guidance that it is never to be interpreted as condoning violence against Russians in general," Meta global affairs President Nick Clegg wrote in a post on the company's internal platform on Sunday that was seen by Reuters. "We also do not permit calls to assassinate a head of state...So, in order to remove any ambiguity about our stance, we are further narrowing our guidance to make explicit that we are not allowing calls for the death of a head of state on our platforms," Clegg said. "These are difficult decisions. Circumstances in Ukraine are fast moving. We try to think through all the consequences, and we keep our guidance under constant review because the context is always evolving," Clegg said. There would be no change to policies on hate speech as far as the Russian people are concerned, he said. Separately, Instagram users in Russia have been notified that the service will cease from midnight on Sunday after its owner Meta Platforms said last week it would allow social media users in Ukraine to post messages such as "Death to the Russian invaders".

Nike Inc: At least six independent Nike stores in Russia were open on Friday afternoon, according to checks made by Reuters, more than a week after the world's biggest sports retailer said it was temporarily closing all its shops in the country. Beaverton, Oregon-based Nike said the stores that were open are owned and operated by independent partners. Reuters could not immediately determine the total number of independent, partner stores that were open on Friday. Nike has roughly 100 stores in the Russian Federation, according to the store directory on its website, which showed that all of them were "open." A Nike spokesperson said Friday that Nike is "updating" its online store locator "to reflect our store closures." Days prior to Nike's announcement that stores would temporarily close, Nike made merchandise purchases on its website and app unavailable in Russia and directed its customers in the country to brick-and-mortar stores instead.

Novavax Inc: Demand for the COVID-19 vaccine produced by U.S. biotech firm Novavax has been underwhelming in the European Union's main countries in the early rollout, so far undermining hopes that it could convince vaccine sceptics to get a shot. Over 85% of adults in the 27-country EU bloc have received at least one dose and nearly two-thirds of them have also had a booster, but tens of millions remain unvaccinated. The Novavax vaccine, the latest to receive the EU regulators' approval under the trade name of Nuvaxovid, was expected to persuade some sceptics because it is based on a more conventional technology than the other four vaccines authorised so far in the EU. But initial data on Nuvaxovid's rollout show that it has had a small impact on vaccination campaigns. In Germany, the EU's most populous country and home to more than 10 million unvaccinated people, only about 36,000 Novavax doses were administered in the first two weeks since the start of the rollout on Feb. 24, according to data from the Robert Koch Institute. Novavax said its protein-based shot will play a role in driving vaccination among those who have been hesitant to get immunised and it has started an educational effort on vaccine choices. The arrival of the vaccine so far into the region's campaign which started in late 2020 and amid the easing of restrictive measures were among the reasons for the "disappointing performance," former head of the EU's drugs agency, Guido Rasi, said.

Sanofi SA: The company’s shares slid after a drug candidate to fight a common type of breast cancer failed to slow progression of the disease in a clinical trial, knocking confidence in the French drugmaker's drug development prowess. Results from the Phase II AMEERA-3 clinical trial, keenly awaited by Sanofi investors, showed the drug amcenestrant, given as a pill, did not have the desired effect when compared to standard endocrine treatment against locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer, Sanofi said in a statement. Sanofi said it would continue with two further trials, AMEERA-5 and AMEERA-6, trying to show amcenestrant could help much larger patient groups of women in early stages of cancer. JP Morgan analysts said Monday's read-out bode ill for those follow-up trials, saying in a note that the "data will increase the risk in investors' minds". The setback puts more pressure on Sanofi to revive its drug development success rate, after it fell far behind in the race to develop COVID-19 vaccines.

Tesla Inc: The company’s Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said on Sunday the U.S. electric carmaker and his rocket company SpaceX are facing significant inflationary pressure in raw materials and logistics. Musk in a tweet also asked about inflation rate outlook and said his companies "are not alone", retweeting an article saying the Ukraine-Russia conflict sent commodity prices to their highest levels since 2008. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been ramping up the prices of metals used in cars, from aluminum in the bodywork to palladium in catalytic converters to the high-grade nickel in electric vehicle batteries, and drivers are likely to foot the bill.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd: Rhode Island is set to square off against Teva, as a multibillion-dollar trial begins over whether the Israeli company contributed to an opioid crisis that has caused more than 500,000 deaths over the past two decades. Rhode Island says Teva created a "public nuisance" by downplaying the risks of opioid addiction and promoting the off-label use of powerful fentanyl-based opioids that were approved only for certain types of cancer pain. Rhode Island is seeking $5.9 billion from the companies, according to a Teva court filing. Rhode Island officials declined to comment on the specific amount. Teva subsidiaries Actavis Pharma and Cephalon Inc are also defendants in the case in Rhode Island Superior Court in Providence. The companies have denied the allegations, saying they sold drugs that were legal and approved for pain treatment. In court filings by Teva, it calls Rhode Island's lawsuit an improper attempt to blame a wide-ranging public health crisis on "a small subset of opioid manufacturers" that make "niche" medicines like Actiq and Fentora. According to Teva's filings, those cancer drugs account for just 0.02% percent of all opioid prescriptions in the state since 1998.

Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd & Rio Tinto PLC: Rio Tinto proposed to buy the 49% of Canada's Turquoise Hill it does not already own for about $2.7 billion, as the Anglo-Australian miner looks to ramp up the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mining project in Mongolia. "(The transaction) would simplify the Oyu Tolgoi ownership structure, strengthen Rio Tinto's copper portfolio, and reinforce its long-term commitment to Mongolia," the company said in a release. "In addition, the Proposed Transaction provides Turquoise Hill minority shareholders with the ability to realise compelling, immediate and certain value for their shares," it also said. Rio controls and operates the Oyu Tolgoi mine - which is 550 km (342 miles) south of Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar and is one of the world's largest known copper and gold deposits - via Turquoise Hill's 66% stake. The government of Mongolia owns 34%.

Uber Technologies Inc: The company said on Friday U.S. customers, excluding New York City, will have to pay a fuel surcharge from March 16 as the ride-hailing firm tries to address concerns of drivers and couriers hit by record high gasoline prices. Customers will have to pay a surcharge fee of either 45 cents or 55 cents on each Uber trip and 35 cents or 45 cents on each Uber Eats order, depending on their location. The money charged will go directly to the workers, Uber said. The surcharge will last for at least 60 days after which it will make adjustments based on feedback from workers and customers.

INSIGHT
War, pandemic, and inflation deal Fed a complex trifecta
In what now seem the simpler days of December, when there was only a pandemic to worry about, Federal Reserve officials rallied around the view they could tame inflation with modest interest rate hikes while the economy and labor market thrived.

ANALYSTS' RECOMMENDATION
3M Co: Jefferies cuts target price to $161 from $186 to better reflect likely end-market headwinds, as well as another bout of cost inflation due to the recent surge in oil and metal prices.

Endeavor Group Holdings Inc: Credit Suisse raises target price to $45 from $37 to reflect sale of Endeavor Content and the Open Bet acquisition.

HanesBrands Inc: Cowen and Company cuts target price to $16 from $17, citing the struggle for growth as balancing EBIT margin and working capital flows is creating volatility and uncertainty.

Harpoon Therapeutics Inc: Piper Sandler cuts target price to $15 from $27 due to the discontinuation of HPN424.

Viper Energy Partners LP: Credit Suisse raises target price to $33 from $26 after raising long-term Brent/WTI oil price forecasts.

Dat alles in beweging zal blijven lijkt me duidelijk in ieder geval.
