Ssslow down! Sleeping snakes stall Tesla's German gigafactory
Hibernating snakes are complicating Elon Musk's plans for a gigafactory near Berlin. A German court has told the U.S. billionaire's electric vehicle company Tesla to suspend clearing of a forest at the site of the proposed factory after environmentalists said that cutting down more trees could endanger hibernating snakes.

BEFORE THE BELL
U.S. stock futures fell as investors focused on surging coronavirus cases that spurred talks of stricter curbs hampering economic revival. European equities were lower as hopes of a Brexit deal faded amid a last-ditch attempt to find a solution. Most Asian shares ended down amid renewed U.S.-China tensions. The dollar edged up due to its safe-haven appeal, while gold was little changed. Oil prices slipped as new lockdowns raised concerns about future demand.

STOCKS TO WATCH

Deals Of The Day
Northrop Grumman Corp (NOC). The weapons manufacturer is selling its federal IT and mission support services business to private-equity firm Veritas Capital for $3.4 billion in cash, the company said on Monday. Northrop Grumman said it expects to use the cash for share buybacks and to pay off debt. The company had net long-term debt of $14.26 billion at the end of September. The business, which is expected to generate $2.3 billion in revenue in 2020, will be combined with Peraton - a company owned by Veritas. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2021.

Uber Technologies Inc (UBER). The company is selling its autonomous driving unit, Uber Advanced Technologies Group (ATG), to self-driving car startup Aurora, the companies said on Monday, in a move that would accelerate the ride-sharing company's goal to achieve profitability. The equity deal valued the ATG at $4 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. Following the sale announced on Monday, Uber is also investing $400 million in Aurora, which values Aurora at $10 billion, the people added. Uber will hold about 26% ownership interest in Aurora on a fully diluted basis, the company said in a filing. The sale will accelerate Uber's goal to achieve profitability on an adjusted basis by the end of 2021, Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi told Reuters in an interview. "This essentially advances our path to profitability," he said.

In Other News
Alphabet Inc (GOOGL) & Facebook Inc (FB). Britain's competition watchdog outlined a new regime for regulating tech giants such as Google and Facebook, saying it needed new powers to harness the full potential of digital markets and drive competition and innovation. The new regime, which will require government legislation, will be part of a wider regulatory framework for digital markets, including new rules for harmful online content and data protection, the CMA said. CMA Chief Executive Andrea Coscelli said consumers and businesses who relied on tech giants like Google and Facebook should be treated fairly, and competitors should face a level playing field.

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN). BMW has developed a data hub with Amazon's cloud computing division, in a sign of how companies are increasingly using "big data" to try to boost efficiency. "We want to switch from gut-driven decisions to data-driven decisions," said Kai Demtroder, vice president of data transformation at BMW. "We have a few hundred data scientists at BMW, but the aim is to make the data accessible to everyone." Demtroder said BMW's "cloud data hub" proved its value as the COVID-19 pandemic began to affect auto production in the spring, as data from Amazon Web Services (AWS) enabled the German carmaker to see which supplier plants had problems.

Boeing Co (BA). Brazil's Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes said on Monday it would resume flying Boeing’s 737 MAX planes on commercial routes in its domestic network from Dec. 9. Gol also said it expects all of the seven 737 MAX aircraft in its current fleet to be cleared to return fully to operation by the end of December. Gol said the first flights of the jet would be on routes to and from the company's hub in Sao Paulo.

Carrier Global Corp (CARR). The air conditioner maker said it would sell its remaining stake in Swedish wholesaler Beijer Ref to private equity group EQT for about $1.1 billion. EQT said the deal to buy 29.6% of shares and 26.4% of votes would make it the largest shareholder in Beijer Ref. The deal would give Carrier cash to cut its debt and fund growth initiatives, the company said in a statement late on Monday.

Citigroup Inc (C) & Deutsche Bank AG (DB). Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group and six of the firms' former staff were committed to stand trial in Australia after pleading not guilty to colluding during a share issue. In the country's biggest white collar criminal case, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has brought charges against the financial giants, their client and their former executives, accusing them of colluding to keep stock they were trying to sell to stop the price falling. Now, with the formal pleas of not guilty, the matter will go to trial in the Federal Court, more than two years since the charges were brought and five years since the A$2.5 billion stock issue for ANZ took place. A trial date has not yet been set.

Energizer Holdings Inc (ENR). The makers of Energizer and Duracell batteries have ended two lawsuits accusing each other of advertising false claims to consumers about battery life. According to filings on Friday in Manhattan federal court, Energizer and Duracell, the battery unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, agreed to voluntarily dismiss competing lawsuits filed there.

Facebook Inc (FB) & Alphabet Inc (GOOGL). Australia finalized plans to make Facebook and Google pay its media outlets for news content, a world-first move aimed at protecting independent journalism that has been strongly opposed by the internet giants. Under laws to go to parliament this week, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the Big Tech firms must negotiate with local publishers and broadcasters how much they pay for content that appears on their platforms. If they can't strike a deal, a government-appointed arbitrator will decide for them. Facebook Australia managing director Will Easton said the company would review the legislation and "engage through the upcoming parliamentary process with the goal of landing on a workable framework to support Australia's news ecosystem".

Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS). The bank has signed a pact to buy out its China joint venture partner to make it the most advanced foreign bank to take full ownership of a mainland securities business. The process to boost its stake in the Goldman Sachs Gao Hua (GSGH) venture from 51% to 100% has also been initiated with regulators, according to an internal memo issued to staff of the Wall Street bank. The terms of the Goldman Sachs deal have not yet been made public.

Palantir Technologies Inc (PLTR). The data analytics company was awarded a $44.4 million contract by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a Palantir spokeswoman said. The three-year contract covers data and analytics services to the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) to speed its review of potential new medicines. It is one of dozens that Palantir has with the U.S. government. The contract also provides services to the FDA's Oncology Center of Excellence, which helps with the development and review of cancer products.

Pfizer Inc (PFE) & BioNTech SE (BNTX). Britain began the mass-vaccination of its population against COVID-19, becoming the first Western nation to do so in a global endeavour that poses one of the biggest logistical challenges in peacetime history. On a day dubbed "V-Day", health workers started inoculating people with a shot developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, with the country a test case for the world as it contends with distributing a compound that must be stored at -70C. Margaret Keenan, a grandmother who turns 91 in a week, became the first person in the world to receive the vaccine outside of a trial when she received the shot at her local hospital in Coventry, central England. Separately, Brazil's government is in advanced talks with Pfizer to buy 70 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine and a Memorandum of Intent should be signed this week, the Health Ministry said on Monday.

Tesla Inc (TSLA). A German court has told the electric vehicle company to suspend clearing of a forest at the site of the proposed factory in Gruenheide after environmentalists said that cutting down more trees could endanger hibernating snakes. "The Landesumweltamt (state environmental authority) and Tesla will now be consulted, they need to make submissions by this afternoon and then we assess the situation," a spokesman for the administrative court in Frankfurt an der Oder in eastern Germany said. Separately, Tesla unveiled a $5 billion capital raise, its second such move in three months as the electric-car maker cashes in on a meteoric rally in its shares this year.

TripAdvisor Inc (TRIP). China has removed 105 apps including that of the travel firm from app stores in the country, under a new campaign to cleanse stores of apps it deems spread content related to pornography, prostitution, gambling and violence. The Cyberspace Administration of China said in a statement on its website that the apps violated one or more of three cyber laws, without providing details for each app. The authority said it started the campaign on Nov. 5 in response to strong reaction from the general public to content deemed offensive. It said it would continue to regulate apps and remove those in violation of the law in a timely manner.
