Japan's Nikkei slid on concerns about rising virus infections. The dollar fell, while gold prices gained to hold steady above the $1,800 level. STOCKS TO WATCH
Results
Autoliv Inc (ALV). The Swedish airbag producer, said it was seeing signs of recovery after running a deeper-than-expected quarterly loss as lockdowns due to the pandemic slammed car production and demand. The group still reported a second-quarter operating loss of $234 million compared with a $170 million profit in the year-ago quarter, well below of a mean forecast for a $133 million loss based on a poll of analysts published by the company. The company said its adjusted operating loss was $171 million in the quarter.
BlackRock Inc (BLK). The world's largest asset manager reported a 21% jump in quarterly profit as investors poured money into its fixed-income funds and cash management services. The company's fixed-income funds took in $60.27 billion in new money. Its cash-management business attracted over $24.2 billion in net inflows in the second quarter. It ended the quarter with $7.32 trillion in assets under management, up from $6.84 trillion a year earlier. The New York-based company's net income rose to $1.21 billion, or $7.85 per share, in the three months ended June 30, from $1.00 billion, or $6.41 per share, a year earlier.
Netflix Inc (NFLX). The company on Thursday elevated its content chief Ted Sarandos to co-CEO, making the 20-year veteran of the pioneering streaming video service a clear successor to co-founder Reed Hastings. For July through September, Netflix forecast it would add 2.5 million new paid streaming customers around the world. Analysts on averaged expected a projection of 5.3 million. For the June quarter, the company reported diluted earnings per share of $1.59, below analyst forecasts of $1.81. Revenue climbed 25% to $6.1 billion.

In Other News
Boeing Co (BA). British Airways, the world's largest operator of Boeing 747s, will retire its entire jumbo jet fleet with immediate effect after the novel coronavirus pandemic sent air travel into freefall. BA had been planning to retire the aircraft in 2024 but with passenger numbers decimated this year and forecasts that it will be years before they recover, the airline said it was unlikely its 747s would ever operate commercially for it again. "It is with great sadness that we can confirm we are proposing to retire our entire 747 fleet with immediate effect," BA said in a statement on Thursday. BA has said it needs to cut up to 12,000 jobs, or about 28% of its workforce, to prepare for the smaller travel market expected over the coming years.
Lyft Inc (LYFT). The ride-hailing company said it would distribute some 60,000 vehicle partition shields to its most-active drivers as a protection against the coronavirus and begin selling the custom-made protective barriers to other drivers later this summer. "It was critical to us that the design met the needs of rideshare drivers specifically, accommodated a wide range of vehicle models, could be self-installed and easily removed, and could be produced at a price point far lower than what is currently available in the market," the spokeswoman said in a statement. Lyft will sell the partitions for about $50 at production cost and without a markup, the company said. Vehicle partition shields are available online from various manufacturers, with prices ranging from $50 to more than $100.
Microsoft Corp (MSFT). The software giant said on Thursday it had trimmed its workforce across geographies and teams as it entered a new fiscal year from July 1. The company declined to elaborate on the roles which had been eliminated, their numbers or their locations. The company cut roles at its online news portal MSN.com, as it shifted to an AI-powered algorithmic feed, according to a Business Insider report earlier this week, which added that jobs were also cut in the Microsoft Azure cloud division. A spokesman said it is common for the company to re-evaluate its business as it enters a new fiscal year.
PG&E Corp (PCG). The Kincade wildfire in California's wine country last October that forced some 2,000 people to flee homes was caused by PG&E's electrical transmission lines, the state's Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said on Thursday. Responding to the finding, Pacific Gas and Electric Co said it did not have access to the investigative report or the evidence Cal Fire has collected at this time. "We look forward to reviewing both at the appropriate time," the company added. Tinder dry vegetation and strong winds, combined with low humidity and warm temperatures, contributed to extreme rates of fire spread, which burned a total of 77,758 acres and destroyed more than 370 structures, Cal Fire said in a statement.
Twitter Inc (TWTR). The company disclosed late on Thursday that hackers targeted about 130 accounts during the cyber attack this week, an incident in which profiles of many prominent personalities and organizations were compromised. Twitter said that the hackers were able to gain control to a "small subset" of the targeted accounts, and send tweets from them. The company added that it was continuing to assess whether the attackers were able to access private data of the targeted accounts. "We're still in the process of assessing longer-term steps that we may take and will share more details as soon as we can," Twitter added in its statement.
United Airlines Holdings Inc (UAL). The airlines and its pilots' union said on Thursday they had reached an agreement on two different packages aimed at reducing involuntary furloughs in the fall and keeping pilots at the ready once coronavirus-hit demand starts to pick up. United's agreement with the Air Line Pilots Association International (ALPA) includes an early retirement deal for pilots 62 and older, as well as a slew of different options for pilots to voluntarily reduce their hours or take a leave of absence during which they would potentially receive health benefits as long as they keep up their training, covered by United.

INSIGHT
On eve of bankruptcy, U.S. firms shower execs with bonuses
Nearly a third of more than 40 large companies seeking U.S. bankruptcy protection during the coronavirus pandemic awarded bonuses to executives within a month of filing their cases, according to a Reuters analysis of securities filings and court records. Under a 2005 bankruptcy law, companies are banned, with few exceptions, from paying executives retention bonuses while in bankruptcy. But the firms seized on a loophole by granting payouts before filing.
