STOCKS TO WATCH
Results
• Eli Lilly and Co: The company posted a 41.5% rise in quarterly profit, helped by demand for its diabetes and cancer drugs, and as it benefited from the U.S. government's move to stock up on the drugmaker's COVID-19 antibody drug for emergency use. The company reported worldwide revenue of $871.2 million in the fourth quarter from the therapy, bamlanivimab. Net earnings rose to $2.12 billion, or $2.32 per share, in the fourth quarter from $1.50 billion, or $1.64 per share, a year earlier.
• Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson: The company beat fourth-quarter core earnings forecasts, helped by strong sales of 5G equipment and the ban on Chinese rival Huawei in several countries. Not only is Ericsson is selling more, but it is also earning more from each sale, with gross margins rising to 40.6% in the quarter from 36.8% a year earlier. Margins are now at levels of a decade ago, having recovered from the low-20%s in 2017. In particular, the core Networks business saw margins at 43.5% from 41.1% a year earlier, on a 20% rise in sales. The company said its operating margin of 12.5% in 2020 reached the 2022 group target range of 12-14% two years early. The company's quarterly adjusted operating earnings rose to 11 billion Swedish crowns ($1.3 billion) from 6.5 billion crowns a year earlier, beating analysts' mean forecast of 8.58 billion crowns.
• Visa Inc: The company beat Wall Street estimates for quarterly profit on Thursday, as its customers shopped online during Christmas and New Year holidays, driving a recovery in payment volumes from the coronavirus-induced slump. A surge in online shopping helped the world's biggest payment processor counter a hit to cross-border volumes from a global slowdown in travel and entertainment. Cross-border volume slumped 21% from a year earlier, but improved from the prior quarter when they crashed 47%. Visa reported a net income of 1.42 per Class A share for the first quarter, compared with analysts' estimates of $1.28 per share.
IPOs
• Roblox Corp: The company has postponed plans to go public because of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's scrutiny of how the video game platform recognizes revenue in its finances, according to a memo the company sent to employees on Thursday. The delay is a setback for one of the most eagerly-anticipated U.S. public market debuts of 2021. The company had said in a regulatory filing earlier this month that it was aiming to list shares on the New York Stock Exchange in February. The SEC has reservations over the way in which Roblox recognizes revenue from the sale of its currency, Robux, on its platform, according to the memo seen by Reuters.
• Southeastern Grocers Inc: The operator of U.S. supermarket chains Winn-Dixie and Harveys decided on Thursday to cancel its initial public offering, the second time in recent years that it pulled an IPO. Southeastern Grocers did not specify the reason for withdrawing the IPO. The company made the decision due to a lack of demand at the price range it was targeting, Reuters reported earlier on Thursday, citing a person familiar with matter.
In Other News
• AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc: The company is exploring raising more capital, including through yet another possible stock sale, to weather the COVID-19 pandemic and take advantage of this week's rally in its shares, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday. AMC said on Monday it had raised $917 million since mid-December through equity and debt issues. "This means that any talk of an imminent bankruptcy for AMC is completely off the table," Chief Executive Adam Aron said in a statement accompanying disclosure of the additional funds.
• AstraZeneca PLC: The European Union's contract with the company for its COVID-19 vaccine contains binding orders, EU Commision head Ursula von der Leyen said, as the bloc continues to press the drugmaker to deliver supplies as promised. "There are binding orders and the contract is crystal clear," von der Leyen told Deutschlandfunk radio, adding it contained clear delivery amounts for December and the first three quarters of 2021. "AstraZeneca has also explicitly assured us in this contract that no other obligations would prevent the contract from being fulfilled," she added. Meanwhile, AstraZeneca has published its COVID-19 vaccine contract with the European Commission, the executive body said, as both are embroiled in a row over cuts in supplies.
• Facebook Inc: The company took down a popular Wall Street discussion group, Robinhood Stock Traders, in a move that its founder on Thursday described as backlash for conversations buoying shares of GameStop and other companies this week. Allen Tran, a 23-year-old from Chicago who created Robinhood Stock Traders, said he woke up on Wednesday to a notification that Facebook had disabled the 157,000-member group. The notification, seen by Reuters, said without detail that the group violated policies on "adult sexual exploitation." "We were first on the picking tree to be cut off because we are on Facebook, not a free platform like Reddit," said Tran, referring to the typically lighter moderation on the discussion website.
• GameStop Corp: Wall Street braced for the return of an army of amateur investors to trading in GameStop and other hot stocks whose surges this week and subsequent suspension have pitched the little guy against short-selling hedge funds. "My expectation is that this will blow over and then the Robinhood crowd will look for a different target, but typically these things come in waves," said Andrea Cicione, head of strategy at TS Lombard in London. Investors, celebrities and policymakers denounced Thursday's restrictions, with two customers suing Robinhood over the trading ban and Capital Hill committees signalling they would hold hearings on the affair.
• Moderna Inc: The pharmaceutical company will deliver 20% fewer vaccines to Italy than promised in the week starting on Feb. 7, Italy's special commissioner for COVID-19 said. "Minutes ago, Moderna told us about the cut in the distribution of its vaccines. In the week beginning Feb. 7, only 132,000 doses will arrive, 20% less than agreed," Domenico Arcuri said. He said the decisions on deliveries were being taken unilaterally and without notice.
• Novartis AG, Pfizer Inc & Biontech SE: Swiss drugmaker Novartis has signed an initial agreement to provide manufacturing capacity for Pfizer and Biontech's COVID-19 vaccine, a move aimed at helping boost production as supplies fall shy of demand. Subject to reaching a final agreement, Novartis plans to commence production in the second quarter of 2021, the Basel-based company said, adding it would use manufacturing facilities at its site in Stein, Switzerland, near the Rhine River on the German border.
• SAP SE & Qualtrics International Inc: SAP hailed the U.S. stock market listing of its Qualtrics unit, urging investors to take it as a cue to reconsider whether its own share price fairly reflected the value of its cloud assets. Shares of Qualtrics jumped nearly 40% on Thursday in their Nasdaq debut, valuing the firm at nearly $21 billion, against the backdrop of a capital market frenzy that has seen investors flock to technology stocks. Applying the same sales multiple to SAP's software and platform service revenue of $5.5 billion would account for its entire market capitalisation of $133 billion - without even considering the rest of the business, Chief Financial Officer Luka Mucic said.
ANALYSIS
How Wall Street gains from 'populist' trading movement
Steep gains in shares of GameStop and other stocks this week have been described as populist market revolts. But among those out ahead are some of Wall Street's largest asset managers, which can realize gains both from their share stakes and from lending out stocks to short sellers.
ANALYSTS' RECOMMENDATION
• Comcast Corp: Scotiabank raises target price to $62 from $56, citing the company’s positive fourth-quarter results and continued growth in broadband subscribers.
• Mastercard Inc: Cowen and Company raises target price to $348 from $345, noting the company’s better-than-expected fourth-quarter results and strong long-term revenue growth.
• McDonald's Corp: Stephens cuts target price to $230 from $232, reflecting on the company’s lower revenue in its fourth quarter and sustained pressure on its earnings per share.
• Mondelez International Inc: Credit Suisse raises target price to $65 from $64, noting the company’s robust results in its fourth quarter and positive guidance for 2021.
• Western Digital Corp: RBC raises target price to $65 from $54, following the company’s strong performance in its second quarter and better forecast.

Wake-up call: Enorm volatiele sessie en GameOver voor GameStop?
Goedemorgen
