Fastly blames software bug for major global internet outage
Fastly Inc, the company behind a major global internet outage this week, said the incident was caused by a bug in its software that was triggered when one of its customers changed their settings.

BEFORE THE BELL
U.S. stock index futures were little changed as investors awaited fresh cues from inflation data this week and an upcoming Federal Reserve meeting. European equities were largely in the red, ahead of a policy decision from the European Central Bank. Japanese shares closed lower on profit-booking in shippers and semiconductor stocks. The dollar edged lower. Gold prices fell. Oil prices were up on signs of strong fuel demand in western economies.

STOCKS TO WATCH

In Other News
Amazon.com Inc & JPMorgan Chase & Co: The e-commerce giant is fielding bids to replace JPMorgan as the issuer on its co-branded credit card portfolio, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. Amazon has sent out a 'request for proposal' for the portfolio, the person said, asking not to be identified as the matter was not public yet. JPMorgan could fetch a 15% premium if it is replaced as partner in the portfolio, which contains more than $15 billion in credit card lending, Bloomberg reported earlier on Tuesday.

BHP Group PLC: Workers at the company’s Spence copper mine in Chile said they would extend negotiations with the company for a few more days to try to reach agreement on a new contract and avoid a strike at the operation, the union told Reuters. The union representing 1,100 workers at the mine in Chile's northern Atacama Desert said it hoped to reach an agreement by the end of Thursday. "We´ll extend our talks by two more days," a union official told Reuters late on Tuesday evening. BHP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc: The company said on Tuesday it has increased prices for products across its menu by about 4% owing to rising labor costs. "We really prefer not to take pricing. But it made sense in this scenario to invest in our employees and get these restaurants staffed and make sure that we have the pipeline of people to support our growth," CEO Brian R. Niccol said at the Baird Global Consumer, Technology & Services Conference. "And then with that, we've taken some pricing to cover that," Niccol added.

Clover Health Investments Corp: Shares of the company jumped and were on course to hit an all-time high on Wednesday, with individual traders on online discussion forums pumping up the stock a day after they sent it soaring about 86%. Medicare-backed insurance seller Clover Health is a new favorite of small-time traders who had previously sent shares of GameStop and AMC Entertainment soaring using social media channels such as Reddit's WallStreetBets. On trading-focused site Stocktwits, message volume related to Clover Health more than doubled and 95.4% of the messages reflected a positive sentiment toward the heavily shorted stock.

DoorDash Inc: The food delivery firm, which is backed by SoftBank, announced the launch of services in Japan, joining an increasingly crowded market that has grown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Services will be initially limited to the city of Sendai in Miyagi prefecture, the money losing delivery firm told reporters, in a step that follows its expansion to Canada and Australia. "Our strategy has always been to empower local economies, especially in the suburban markets that are historically underserved, yet the appetite for connectivity between merchants and customers is high," Chief Executive Tony Xu said.

Fastly Inc: The company behind a major global internet outage this week, said the incident was caused by a bug in its software that was triggered when one of its customers changed their settings. Tuesday's outage raised questions about the reliance of the internet on a few infrastructure companies. "This outage was broad and severe, and we're truly sorry for the impact to our customers and everyone who relies on them," the company said in a blog post authored by Nick Rockwell, its senior engineering and infrastructure executive. He said the problem should have been anticipated. The company post gave a timeline of events and promised to examine and explain why Fastly had failed to detect the software bug during its own testing process.

GameStop Corp: The company is set to report its quarterly results after the bell on Wednesday, with a cult following of individual investors looking for progress in turning around the struggling videogame retailer following its recent share price surge. GameStop's volatile shares have risen over 80% in the past month, and they are now just 15% below their closing high in January. While the recent rollout of new videogame consoles is likely to benefit GameStop, analysts warn that its soaring stock price has become disconnected from the company's day-to-day business. At least two Wall Street analysts recently dropped coverage of the company.

Johnson & Johnson: Brazil will receive a first batch of 3 million doses of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine against COVID-19 in the next few days, Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said. Queiroga said export of the vaccines, developed by J&J's Janssen subsidiary, from the United States still requires authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. "Of course, if the FDA's decision is delayed, these 3 million doses may no longer be useful for us, due to the short time," he said testifying before a Senate commission of inquiry into the Brazilian governments handling of the pandemic. This batch of vaccines expire on June 27.

JPMorgan Chase & Co: The bank said it will exclude Huawei's dollar bonds from some its most influential investment indices from the end of next month, following the latest ratcheting up of U.S. sanctions on Chinese technology firms. "Huawei USD-denominated bonds will be excluded from J.P. Morgan fixed income indices (including the CEMBI and JACI families) since the issuing entities for these securities (Proven Glory Capital Ltd. and Proven Honour Capital Ltd.) are explicitly named and in scope of the Amended Order," JPMorgan said in a note to index users late on Tuesday.

Marqeta Inc: The payments startup, which counts the likes of Uber and Stripe among existing backers, on Tuesday priced its initial public offering (IPO) well above the target range to raise $1.2 billion, the company said. Marqeta sold 45.45 million shares at $27 per share. It had earlier set a price range of $20 to $24 a share. On a fully diluted basis, which includes securities such as stock options and restricted stock units, Marqeta is currently valued at $15.23 billion, based on its IPO price.

Moderna Inc: A Wisconsin pharmacist who pleaded guilty to trying to spoil hundreds of doses of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine because he was skeptical about them has been jailed for three years, the U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesay. Steven R. Brandenburg, 46, was also ordered to pay about $83,800 in compensation to the hospital at which he worked, according to a statement on Tuesday from the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Court documents showed he purposefully removed a box of COVID-19 vaccine vials from a hospital refrigeration unit during two successive overnight shifts in December last year, the Justice Department said.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC: The company will seek ways to accelerate its energy transition strategy and deepen carbon emission cuts following a landmark Dutch court ruling last month, CEO Ben van Beurden said, a move that will likely lead to a dramatic shrinking of its oil and gas business. Shell plans to appeal the May 26 court ruling that ordered it to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 from 2019 levels, significantly faster than its current plans. But the court ruling applies immediately and cannot be suspended before the appeal, van Beurden said in a LinkedIn post. "For Shell, this ruling does not mean a change, but rather an acceleration of our strategy," van Beurden said.

Ryanair Holdings PLC: The company won its challenge against state aid granted to virus-hit German charter airline Condor, marking its third victory in its fight against billions of euros in support granted to its rivals as Europe's second-top court annulled a regulatory decision. The Luxembourg-based General Court, however, said that Condor would not be required to repay the German aid for now due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pending a new decision by the European Commission.

Sinovac Biotech Ltd, Pfizer Inc & BioNTech SE: Uruguay on Tuesday released real-world data on the impact of Sinovac’s COVID-19 vaccine among its population that showed it was over 90% effective in preventing intensive care admissions and deaths. The shot reduced deaths by 95% and intensive care admissions by 92%, and also showed 61% efficacy in cutting coronavirus infections, the government said. The government also studied the effectiveness of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine among 162,047 health workers and people over 80 years old. The shot was 94% effective at preventing intensive care unit admissions and deaths, and reduced infections by 78%, the report said.

United Parcel Service Inc: The company expects to top $100 billion in total revenue in 2023, the world's biggest parcel delivery company said as it laid out its three-year financial targets. The company forecast full-year revenue between $98 billion to $102 billion for 2023, compared with the average analyst estimate of $100.19 billion, according to Refinitiv data. It reported a full-year revenue of $84.6 billion in 2020. UPS also said it expects to be carbon-neutral across scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in its global operations by 2050.

Yandex NV: Yandex.Drive, the car-sharing firm owned by the Russian internet group, will launch a platform to customers that can be used to operate their own vehicle fleets, the company's head of e-commerce and ride-tech business said. The new platform, which has been tested on a Yandex.Drive fleet of about 16,000 vehicles, would be offered to taxi companies, freight operators and logistics firms around the globe, Daniil Shuleiko told Reuters. "I think that this will be a very significant share in the revenue of the (car-sharing) service," Shuleiko said.
