Futures for the Nasdaq bounced following a brutal sell-off in heavyweight technology stocks, while Asians shares lost gains. European shares were higher, although sentiment remained fragile after AstraZeneca suspended global trials of its COVID-19 vaccine. Oil futures clawed back some of the losses they sustained in the previous session. Gold prices slipped on a stronger dollar. Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) data is scheduled for release later in the day.
STOCKS TO WATCH
IPOs
• AmWell Inc (AMWL). The telehealth provider said on Tuesday it expects to raise about $560 million in its initial public offering in the United States, as the coronavirus pandemic boosts demand for virtual healthcare offerings. The company set a price target of between $14 and $16 per share for its sale of 35 million shares. Amwell said it has applied to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "AMWL."
• Cohn Robbins Holdings Corp (CRHC_u). Gary Cohn, the former economic adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, raised $720 million on Tuesday in an initial public offering (IPO) for a new blank-check acquisition company, 20% more than originally planned, according to a person familiar with the matter. Shares in the company, a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), sold for $10 apiece, the standard typical price in SPAC IPOs.
Results
• Lululemon Athletica Inc (LULU). The yogawear maker said on Tuesday it was "cautiously optimistic" about the holiday season and forecast current-quarter adjusted profit to fall as much as 20% due to higher marketing expenses. Lululemon said it would ramp up marketing spending on Mirror, the at-home fitness company it bought for $500 million earlier this year, to capitalize on booming demand for home workout classes spurred by the coronavirus and the opportunity to drive business during the holiday season. Lululemon's direct-to-consumer business, which includes online sales, jumped 155% in the second quarter. Net revenue rose 2.1% to $902.9 million, compared with estimates of $842.5 million.
In Other News
• Arch Capital Group Ltd (ACGL) & Watford Holdings Ltd (WTRE). A consortium led by insurer Arch Capital has made an approximately $500 million offer to acquire Watford Holdings, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. The bid comes more than a year after Watford went public. Since then, its shares have lost about a third of their value as investors questioned the company's ability to generate enough from investment returns to adequately cover its expenses as it paid out on insurance policies. Arch has partnered with private equity firms to offer about $26 per share for Watford, the sources said.
• AstraZeneca PLC (AZN). AstraZeneca has paused global trials of its experimental coronavirus vaccine after an unexplained illness in a participant, denting the British drugmaker's shares as the move was seen as dimming prospects for an early rollout. On Tuesday, AstraZeneca said it voluntarily paused trials, including late-stage ones, to allow an independent committee to review safety data, and it was working to expedite the review to minimise any potential impact on the trial timeline. Separately, the company’s suspension of its COVID-19 vaccine trials after a participant's unexplained illness did not mean the vaccine had been scrapped and showed safety standards were being adhered to, Australia's deputy chief medical officer said.
• Baidu Inc (BIDU). The Chinese tech giant is in talks with investors to raise up to $2 billion over three years for a biotech startup, which will use AI technology to discover new drugs and diagnose diseases, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said. A second person confirmed the startup plan. Baidu is unlikely to be the controlling investor, the first person said. Both sources spoke on condition of anonymity, adding they did not have more details on the investment as talks were still under way.
• BlackRock Inc (BLK). Mexico declared void a tender process, where a consortium that includes the U.S. investment group was the sole bidder, to build a section of one of the government's flagship infrastructure projects, the so-called "Mayan Train".The 910-mile train project is designed to link tourist hot spots and spur development on the Yucatan Peninsula at an estimated cost of $7 billion.
• Blackstone Group Inc (BX). The company’s Chief Executive Stephen Schwarzman has spent more than $27 million so far this year backing U.S. politicians, including President Donald Trump, making him Wall Street's largest campaign contributor, according to a Reuters review of regulatory filings. Schwarzman, whose net worth is pegged by Forbes at $18.2 billion, has given more to political campaigns this year than those who outspent him on Wall Street in the previous U.S. presidential election cycle of 2016, including Bloomberg LP founder Michael Bloomberg and hedge fund veterans George Soros, Paul Singer and Robert Mercer, the filings from the Center of Responsive Politics and the Campaign Finance Institute show.
• BioNTech SE (BNTX) & Pfizer Inc (PFE). The European Commission said it had entered final stage talks with BioNTech-Pfizer to purchase up to 300 million doses of a potential vaccine against COVID-19. This is the sixth potential vaccine for which the EU executive has struck or plans to strike an advance purchase agreement. The envisaged contract with Germany's BioNTech and U.S.-based Pfizer would lead to an initial purchase of 200 million doses, with an option to buy a further 100 million, the Commission said after the conclusion of exploratory talks.
• Energizer Holdings Inc (ENR). Duracell, the battery unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, sued the maker of Energizer batteries on Tuesday, accusing it falsely advertising that its Energizer MAX batteries last up to 50% longer than other alkaline batteries. The lawsuit follows Energizer Holdings own lawsuit last Sept. 30 accusing Duracell of falsely advertising that its then-new "Optimum" batteries were more powerful and lasted longer than rival batteries.
• Energy Transfer LP (ET). The company expects to have expanded capacity available on its embattled Dakota Access crude oil pipeline by the third quarter of next year, it said on Tuesday in a presentation to investors. The Dallas-based pipeline operator plans to roughly double the amount of crude oil that can flow through the 570,000-barrel-per-day Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).
• Enterprise Products Partners LP (EPD). The oil and gas pipeline operator pulled the plug on its 450,000-barrels-per-day Midland to ECHO 4 expansion project in Texas. The project (M2E4) aimed to connect a storage site in Midland to the ECHO terminal in the U.S. state and the cancellation comes when crude producers across North America have slashed their output to cope with steep declines in oil prices, lowering the demand for more pipeline capacity.
• Facebook Inc (FB) & Twitter Inc (TWTR). Three Republican U.S. senators on Tuesday introduced the latest legislation targeting a federal law that largely exempts tech platforms such as Facebook and Twitter from legal liability for the material their users post. The bill from Senator Roger Wicker, Senator Lindsey Graham and Senator Marsha Blackburn is titled the 'Online Freedom and Viewpoint Diversity Act.
• KKR & Co Inc (KKR). The financial investor is injecting $147 million in additional capital into crisis-hit Swiss snack machine operator Selecta under a debt restructuring agreement. In addition, outstanding bonds would be converted into securities that would not mature until 2026 in a move that will significantly reduce the company's high level of indebtedness, Selecta said in a statement released late on Tuesday.
• Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LYG). Britain's biggest domestic bank is making 865 redundancies, as lenders resume cost-cutting measures while the COVID-19 pandemic hammers the industry's profits. Lloyds had temporarily stopped job losses and restructuring early in the pandemic, with the commitment running until October. Union Unite criticised the cuts, which come alongside the creation of 226 new roles.
• Lyft Inc (LYFT). The ride-hailing firm said on Tuesday that its trips rose 7.3% in August from July as operations in Canada recovered faster than in the United States. But the novel coronavirus pandemic is still crushing demand with overall August rides down 53% compared to a year earlier, said the company, which operates in the U.S. and Canada only.
• Novartis AG (NVS). Switzerland's Novartis and Roche were fined $522 million by France, after its competition authority said they used abusive practices to push costly eye injection Lucentis over a cheaper drug. The company said it would appeal, is facing high stakes in protecting Lucentis sales in Europe, after its newest eye drug, Beovu, has run into safety concerns that have slowed uptake. Novartis must pay 385 million euros and Roche about 60 million euros, according to the decision.
• Northrop Grumman Corp (NOC). The Defense contractor said on Tuesday it was awarded a $13.3 billion contract by the U.S. Air Force to modernize the country's intercontinental ballistic missile system. The contract comes as the U.S. military embarks on a costly modernization of its aging atomic weapons.
• Ryanair Holdings PLC (RYAAY). The company has cut its annual passenger target to 50 million passengers from a forecast of 60 million made in July as COVID-19 renders the winter a "write-off", Group Chief Executive Michael O'Leary told Reuters in an interview. The airline in July cut its passenger target to 60 million for the financial year to March 2021, from the 80 million it had forecast in May. But a spike in COVID-19 cases and the poor performance of some EU governments has cut that and the number to 50 million - one-third of the level of last year - and it may go lower, O'Leary said.
• Parsley Energy Inc (PE). The shale producer raised its cash flow target and reinstated its 2020 production guidance on Tuesday, saying it expects to pump about 110,000 barrels of oil per day in the fourth quarter, according to a company presentation. Parsley is targeting $400 million in free cash flow this year, up from a prior goal of $350 million, according to a presentation posted on its website.
• Tiffany & Co (TIF). LVMH warned it was set to walk away from its planned $16 billion takeover of Tiffany, due to complications arising over the deal. LVMH said that its board had received a letter from the French foreign ministry asking it to delay the acquisition of Tiffany to beyond Jan. 6, 2021 given the threat of additional U.S. tariffs against French products.
• Under Armour Inc (UAA). The sportswear maker said on Tuesday it will lay off about 600 employees from its global workforce, citing the impact brought on by the coronavirus pandemic to its business. The company expects to incur about $235 million in charges, including up to $135 million for contract termination and other restructuring costs, it said in a filing.

Vandaag bekijken we hoe Adyen, Prosus en Just Eat erbij staan.
