TOP NEWS
Republicans face growing corporate backlash after Capitol assault
Republicans in the U.S. Congress faced growing blowback on Monday from businesses that said they would cut off campaign contributions to those who voted last week to challenge President-elect Joe Biden's victory.

EU watchdog to review AstraZenenca-Oxford vaccine this month
Europe's drugs regulator will review the COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University this month under an accelerated timeline, the watchdog said.

Another Chinese city goes into lockdown amid new COVID-19 threat
China imposed new coronavirus curbs in areas near Beijing, putting 4.9 million people in Langfang city under lockdown as new infections raised worries about a second wave in a country that has mostly contained the disease.

New U.S. tariffs on French, German aircraft parts, wines to start today
The U.S. government on Monday said it would begin collecting new duties on aircraft parts and other products from France and Germany from Tuesday after failing to resolve a 16-year dispute over aircraft subsidies with the European Union.

Jabs equal jobs? Fed sees possible economic boom if vaccine gets on track
One U.S. Federal Reserve official says there is now a "clearer focus" about the economy's path forward and a horizon for a fuller recovery. Another says the pandemic's "endgame" is here. A third predicts 2021 will prove "impressive." After a catastrophic spell when economic conditions were so confounded by the coronavirus that the Fed stopped making projections altogether, U.S. central bankers now like what they see.

BEFORE THE BELL
U.S. stock index futures edged higher as investors looked forward to earnings season beginning this week. European stocks were mixed. Japan’s Nikkei inched up to close at a fresh three-decade high, as drug makers led the charge on a report that Chugai Pharmaceutical's drug was effective in treating COVID-19 patients. Gold prices gained and the dollar was slightly lower as focus returned to prospects of inflation driven by more U.S. fiscal stimulus under President-elect Joe Biden. Oil hit an 11-month high as tighter supply and expectations of a drop in U.S. inventories offset concerns over climbing coronavirus cases globally. Job Openings and Labour Turnover Survey data is expected later in the day on U.S. economic schedule.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Moves
Blackstone Group Inc: The hedge fund investor is bringing in a former endowment chief at Brown University as the co-head of its Blackstone Alternative Asset Management (BAAM) unit. The company has hired Joe Dowling to join John McCormick who has run the $78 billion hedge fund unit since early 2018, the company confirmed on Monday. The Wall Street Journal first reported the news. Blackstone's hedge fund unit backs new hedge funds, invests alongside hedge funds, buys majority stakes in them and offers internally run hedge funds. All businesses have expanded since McCormick was promoted to head the unit.

In Other News
Abercrombie & Fitch Co: The apparel retailer on Monday forecast holiday-quarter net sales to decline between 5% and 7%, as strong online demand was not enough to cushion the blow from temporary store closures and COVID-19 restrictions. The company had previously estimated net sales to decline between 5% and 10% for the quarter, with analysts expecting a 5.5% fall, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. Abercrombie also said it expected fourth-quarter gross profit rate to be up at least 130 basis points, compared to last year's 58.2%, as it discounted less.

Alphabet Inc & Facebook Inc: The Biden administration should expand antitrust cases against Google and Facebook and encourage breaking up companies, according to a group whose founder is working with the president-elect's transition team. The American Economic Liberties Project, an influential Washington-based anti-monopoly group, issued a report with guidance for antitrust enforcers in the next administration. The group is led by Sarah Miller, who is working with President-elect Joe Biden's transition team and has been instrumental in making antitrust enforcement against Big Tech a mainstream issue. The group urged that the U.S. Justice Department make clear it will continue antitrust action against Google by expanding the scope of litigation beyond search to maps, travel and its app store.

AstraZeneca Plc: Europe's drugs regulator will review the COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University this month under an accelerated timeline, the watchdog said. The 27-member European Union is trying to speed up vaccinations after a slow start and as supply shortages oblige authorities to consider measures, such as extending the time between first and second shots. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said it had received an application from the British drugmaker and could issue an opinion on a conditional marketing authorisation by Jan. 29 at a meeting of its human medicines committee (CHMP).

Acacia Communications Inc & Cisco Systems Inc: Acacia said on Monday it had filed a counterclaim against Cisco, days after the network gear maker sought a court order asking Acacia to close the $2.84 billion deal it had ended. The optical component maker said it was seeking a declaration that it validly terminated the merger with Cisco, after the deal failed to obtain regulatory approval from China within the originally agreed time frame. Last week, Cisco said it had received the approval from China on Jan. 7 and sought confirmation from the Delaware Court of Chancery that it has met all conditions for closing the deal. Acacia, in response, said that an email dated Jan. 7 from an employee of China's State Administration for Market Regulation stating that Cisco's submission was "sufficient to address the relevant competition concerns", does not constitute regulatory approval. The company added that it intends to vigorously defend itself against Cisco's claims.

Deutsche Bank AG: The bank will not do business in the future with U.S. President Donald Trump or his companies in the wake of his supporters' assault on the U.S. Capitol, the New York Times reported. Deutsche Bank is Trump's biggest lender, with about $340 million in loans outstanding to the Trump Organization, the president's umbrella group that is currently overseen by his two sons, according to Trump's disclosures with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics dated July 31 last year, plus banking sources. The move, reported by the NYT and citing a person familiar with the bank's thinking, comes as Signature Bank - where Trump's ethics disclosures show he has checking and money-market accounts - called for him to step down. "The resignation of the president ... is in the best interests of our nation and the American people," Signature Bank said on its website.

Facebook Inc: The company’s operations chief Sheryl Sandberg said on Monday the world's largest social network had no plans to lift its block on the accounts of U.S. President Donald Trump, as the company clamped down on a phrase that has become a rallying cry for the president's supporters. Sandberg, speaking during the Reuters Next conference, said she was glad that Facebook had frozen Trump's accounts, which came as tech giants scrambled to crack down on his baseless claims about fraud in the U.S. presidential election amid riots in Washington last week. Hours later, the company banned the phrase "stop the steal" altogether, citing use of the term to organize events contesting the outcome of the U.S. presidential election that have a propensity for violence.

GlaxoSmithKline PLC & Vir Biotechnology Inc: The drugmakers will evaluate a second antibody-based treatment in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 in an early- to mid-stage trial, the companies said. The new trial, supported by England's National Health Service, is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2021 at multiple sites across the UK, the companies said in a joint statement. Preclinical data suggested the companies' monoclonal antibody (mAb) has the ability to clear infected cells and the potential to enhance virus-specific T cell function, which could help treat and/or prevent infection.

Intel Corp: The company plans to tap Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to make a second generation discrete graphics chip for personal computers that it hopes will help it combat the rise of Nvidia Corp, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The chip, known as "DG2", will be made on a new chipmaking process at TSMC that has not yet been formally named but is an enhanced version of its 7-nanometer process, the two people familiar the matter said. With its graphics chips, Intel is looking to tap into the booming PC gaming market. Its DG2 chip is expected to be released late this year or in early 2022 and compete with Nvidia and AMD gaming chips that cost between $400 and $600, the sources said.

PayPal Holdings Inc: The company said on Monday it had blocked a Christian crowdfunding site, GiveSendGo, after it helped raise funds for people who attended last week's event in Washington when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol. The digital payments processor also confirmed to Reuters that it closed an account held by Ali Alexander, one of the organizers of the gathering. The news was reported earlier by Bloomberg, which cited an unidentified source.

Salesforce.com Inc: The business software maker said on Monday it had "taken action" to prevent its tools from being used by the U.S. Republican National Committee in ways that could lead to further violence around the country's presidential transition. "We are all deeply troubled by the terrible events of January 6," Salesforce said, referring to supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump storming the Capitol last Wednesday. "And while we all hope that they are never repeated, sadly there remains a risk of politically incited violence across the country." Salesforce declined to specify the preventative action taken in regard to the RNC which the company said has been a long-standing customer. Its acceptable use policy, which is posted online, bars customers from using Salesforce services to promote illegal activity or mislead people about voting processes.

Sinovac Biotech Ltd: Malaysia Pharmaniaga Bhd has signed an agreement with the company to purchase 14 million doses of ready-to-fill COVID-19 vaccines and later to manufacture the vaccine domestically, it said. Pharmaniaga said in a bourse filing that the company will carry out a fill-and-finish process of the vaccine in Malaysia, and will subsequently enter into local manufacturing, under license from Sinovac for its technology and know-how. Pharmaniaga Group Managing Director Zulkarnain Md Eusope said the company has a monthly fill-and-finish capacity of two million doses and that Sinovac's vaccine will be the first to be manufactured in Malaysia.

Twitter Inc: The company said it has suspended more than 70,000 accounts since Friday that were primarily dedicated to sharing QAnon content after last week's violence in Washington when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol. "Given the violent events in Washington, DC, and increased risk of harm, we began permanently suspending thousands of accounts that were primarily dedicated to sharing QAnon content on Friday afternoon", Twitter said in a blog late on Monday. "These accounts were engaged in sharing harmful QAnon-associated content at scale and were primarily dedicated to the propagation of this conspiracy theory across the service", the company said.

Walt Disney Co: Disneyland, which has remained closed since March, will become the first large site to provide COVID-19 vaccinations in Orange County, California, government officials announced late on Monday. Disneyland will be the first Super Point-of-Dispensing (POD) sites in the county and become operational later this week, the district officials said in a statement. "The Disneyland Resort, the largest employer in the heart of Orange County, has stepped up to host the county's first Super POD site – undertaking a monumental task in our vaccination distribution process," said acting chairman Andrew Do, Orange County Supervisor, representing the First District.

Wake-up call: Hoogvliegers lager, goedkopere sectoren wat hoger

Goedemorgen
