BEFORE THE BELL
Wall Street futures were little changed ahead of Federal Reserve's policy meeting and a raft of earnings from top companies including Alphabet, Microsoft and Starbucks later in the day. European shares were in the red as UBS became the latest bank to disclose a hit from dealing with Archegos. Asian equities ended on a mixed note with Nikkei closing lower after disappointing quarterly updates. Oil rose ahead of the OPEC+ meeting to discuss output policy. The dollar index and gold prices were slightly higher.

STOCKS TO WATCH

Results
ABB Ltd: The company said it is considering a stock market listing for its electric vehicle charging business, as profit at the Swiss engineering group jumped by a third to return to pre-pandemic levels in the first quarter. ABB reported a 34% rise in net profit to $502 million in the first quarter of 2021 from the year earlier period as customers rebuilt inventories, close to the $535 million posted for the first quarter of 2019.

BP PLC: The company's profit more than tripled to $2.6 billion in the first quarter thanks to stronger oil prices and bumper revenue from natural gas trading, paving the way for the energy company to start buying back its shares. First-quarter underlying replacement cost profit, the company's definition of net income, rose to $2.6 billion, far exceeding forecasts of $1.64 billion in a company-provided survey of analysts. That was also up from a $110 million profit in the fourth quarter of 2020 and close to a pre-pandemic profit of $2.4 billion in the first quarter of 2019.

General Electric Co: The industrial conglomerate reported a 20% fall in quarterly profit, hit by a slump in demand for aircraft engines as airlines struggle to recover from a pandemic-led collapse in travel. On an adjusted basis, GE's industrial profit fell to $828 million in the first-quarter ended March 31, from $1.03 billion a year earlier. Excluding items, GE earned 3 cents per share in the quarter, compared with 2 cents per share a year earlier. Revenue fell 12% to $17.12 billion.

HSBC Holdings PLC: The Europe's biggest bank by assets beat quarterly profit forecasts and released $400 million it had set aside to cover bad loans caused by the pandemic, as rapid vaccine rollouts in the United States and Britain raise hopes for an economic recovery. The bank cautioned, however, that high levels of uncertainty meant it was keeping the bulk of the $3 billion it set aside a year ago to cover potential bad debts. HSBC reported profit before tax of $5.78 billion for the three months to March 30, up from $3.21 billion a year ago and well above analysts' average forecast of $3.35 billion as compiled by the bank.

Nomura Holdings Inc & UBG Group AG: UBS reported an unexpected $774 million loss from the collapse of U.S. investment fund Archegos, taking the total hit to global banks from the stricken family office beyond $10 billion. The charge taken by Switzerland's biggest bank comes as the fallout from Archegos continues to ripple across the banking industry, with Nomura posting its biggest quarterly loss in over a decade as a result of its dealings with the stricken fund. The Japanese bank said it will book losses of around $2.9 billion this year on Archegos.

Novartis AG: Mask wearing during the pandemic kept the flu largely at bay this year, dampening Novartis's generic cough medicines business and helping drag the Swiss drugmaker's first-quarter profit below analyst expectations. First-quarter core net income slipped 4% from a year earlier to $3.4 billion, compared to the $3.5 billion average analyst estimate in a Refinitiv poll. Sales were 1% higher at $12.4 billion, compared to the $12.5 billion forecast. Net income fell 5% to $2.06 billion.

Tesla Inc: The electric carmaker marginally beat Wall Street expectations for first-quarter revenue on Monday boosted by a jump in environmental credit sales to other automakers and liquidating some bitcoins. Tesla, which had invested $1.5 billion in bitcoin, trimmed its position by 10% during the quarter, said Chief Financial Officer Zachary Kirkhorn. Tesla said proceeds from sales of digital assets amounted to $272 million with a $101 million "positive impact". Tesla earned $518 million from sales of environmental credits, up 46% from a year earlier. Tesla earns credits for exceeding emissions and fuel economy standards and sells them to other automakers that fall short. Revenue rose to $10.39 billion from $5.99 billion a year earlier. Analysts had expected revenue of $10.29 billion.

United Parcel Service Inc: The company topped Wall Street estimates for quarterly revenue, as the world's biggest parcel delivery company benefited from a surge in online purchases during the COVID-19 pandemic. UPS, which is also delivering COVID-19 vaccines, said revenue in its U.S. domestic unit rose 22.3%, led by growth from small- and medium-sized businesses.
Excluding items, the company earned $2.77 per share. Total revenue rose 27% to $22.9 billion, beating estimates of $20.49 billion, according to Refinitiv data.

Vale SA: The iron ore miner beat first quarter profit estimates on Monday, with the Brazilian company boosted by a record performance in its ferrous minerals division. In a securities filing, Vale reported net income of $5.55 billion, well above the Refinitiv consensus estimate of $5.06 billion. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, came in at $8.35 billion. That was a slight miss compared to the Refinitiv estimate of $8.4 billion but the company said its pro forma EBITDA figure - scrubbed of some non-recurring items - came to $8.47 billion.

Deals Of The Day
Lyft Inc & Toyota Motor Corp: Toyota will acquire Lyft's self-driving technology unit for $550 million, the companies said, as the Japanese firm steps up its automation ambitions with the newly created Woven Planet division. "This is the first step of establishing and bringing together the people. Obviously building technology and product requires people, and that's much what this acquisition is about," Woven Planet chief executive James Kuffner told reporters. It will also give Toyota a direct presence in Silicon Valley and London and expand smart-city project "Woven City" at the base of Japan's Mt. Fuji, effectively helping it ride through dramatic changes expected in the mobility industry and major centres, he said.

In Other News:
Amazon.com Inc: The labor group that did not secure enough votes from Amazon warehouse workers in Alabama to form a union said on Monday the hearing on its objections to the election is set to start on May 7, citing a government filing. The U.S. National Labor Relations Board did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

AstraZeneca PLC & Pfizer Inc: U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai on Monday met virtually with top executives of drugmakers Pfizer and AstraZeneca to discuss a proposed waiver of certain intellectual property rights in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of the World Trade Organization are due to discuss a proposal by India and South Africa to waive certain provisions of the WTO's Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) on April 30, but the United States and a few other big countries have blocked such a move.

DoorDash Inc: The largest U.S. third-party food delivery company said it lowered some fees for restaurants to use its platform after many have struggled to stay in business during the recession. The company will allow restaurants to choose three tiers of service - including its lowest "basic" plan that costs a commission of 15%. Under DoorDash's new pricing system, eateries can still choose to pay high delivery commissions to DoorDash in exchange for more marketing, a wider delivery radius and better placement in the app, Chief Operating Officer Christopher Payne said in a call with reporters on Monday.

Exxon Mobil Corp: The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) said on Monday it plans to vote for Engine No. 1's four director nominees to Exxon Mobil's board, throwing additional support to the activist hedge fund in its proxy fight with the company. "CalPERS is supporting additional board refreshment due to the long-term financial underperformance at ExxonMobil and the need for a greater depth of skill sets and experience on the board to address the significant challenges the company faces," the pension fund said on Monday. Separately, the company is looking for temporary workers for its Beaumont, Texas, refinery beginning in May when it has threatened to lock out 650 workers at the plant, sources familiar with the search said on Monday.

Facebook Inc: Gucci and Facebook have filed a joint lawsuit in California against an individual who allegedly used the U.S. group's social media platforms to sell fake Gucci products, the two companies said. In a statement, Gucci - the profit engine of French group Kering - and Facebook alleged the unidentified defendant used multiple Facebook and Instagram accounts to promote her international online counterfeit business.

Fiserv Inc: The payments company has reached a deal with Brazilian state-controlled lender Caixa Economica Federal to offer its card services to the bank's clients, according to a securities filing on Monday. The deal estimates a total payment volume processed of 457 billion reais throughout the next 20 years. The value of the deal has not been disclosed.

GameStop Corp: The company has raised $551 million through an equity offering as the videogame retailer accelerates its shift to e-commerce. The company, which was at the center of a Reddit-fueled trading frenzy earlier this year, said in a statement it had sold 3.5 million shares in the at-the-market offering. Based on Reuters calculation, the average price of the shares sold was $157.43.

Gilead Sciences Inc: Gilead said on Monday it will give India at least 450,000 vials of its antiviral drug remdesivir and help boost production, as the world's second-most populous country reels from surging coronavirus cases. Seven Indian companies have licensed the drug from Gilead, with an installed capacity of about 3.9 million units per month. Gilead said on Monday all of them were scaling up their batch sizes and adding new manufacturing facilities and local contract manufacturers.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc: The company's long-planned online migration of some lucrative prime-brokerage businesses picked up steam during the pandemic as hedge funds and investors working from home were unable to meet in person, while other Wall Street banks are taking more measured steps. Last July, Goldman Sachs launched Marquee Connect, offering online virtual introduction services for top clients. Other prime brokers told Reuters they were also moving to bring some prime broker services online, but one cautioned that clients may be getting "Zoom fatigue" with hopes to resume meeting in person once more people are vaccinated. Hedge fund managers and investors on Goldman's Marquee Connect, for example, create profiles that allocators can use to search for the funds that fit their targets. Over the past nine months, the application has signed up over 900 hedge funds, more than 600 investor firms and made 4,500-plus connections, executives in Goldman's prime brokerage team told Reuters.

Johnson & Johnson: Roughly 57% of investor votes cast backed healthcare company J&J's executive pay for 2020, a low level of support for a proposal most shareholders usually rubberstamp. The low support, not including abstentions, for the non-binding proposal comes after the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer urged other shareholders to vote "No" on the company's pay practices, namely because J&J sets aside certain litigation costs when calculating executive compensation, including from the U.S. opioid epidemic. Separately, Venezuela is interested in acquiring the J&J coronavirus vaccine for its inoculation campaign, parliament chief Jorge Rodriguez said on Monday, adding that authorities want to know more about its side effects.

MicroVision Inc: Shares of the laser-developer jumped 47% on Monday and other Reddit favorites rallied, suggesting that interest in so-called meme stocks remains strong after a wild ride this year. MicroVision, which develops laser scanning technology for automotive lidar sensors and augmented reality, was the most mentioned stock on Reddit's popular WallStreetBets forum on Monday, according to sentiment tracker SwaggyStocks.

ANALYSIS
Cashing blank checks: why the bold favor SPACs
Confident financial projections are common in SPAC deals and have been a decisive factor in attracting firms regarded as more risky, often loss-making and years away from even having any sales, over IPOs as a route to going public, industry insiders said and a Reuters review of data compiled by Jay Ritter, a professor at the University of Florida, confirms.

Wake-up call: Wachten op FED en cijfers?

Goedemorgen,
