Tesla top-of-range car caught fire while owner was driving, lawyer says
A Tesla Model S Plaid electric vehicle burst into flames on Tuesday while the owner was driving, just three days after the $129,900, top-of-the-range car was delivered following its June launch, an attorney for the driver told Reuters.

BEFORE THE BELL
Wall Street futures were in the green as market participants contemplated on making riskier bets ahead of the closely watched employment data that could decide the next leg of equity markets and subsequent policy support going forward. European shares rose on a boost from semiconductor makers. Japan's Nikkei closed higher, as gains in export-focused Sony Group and Toyota Motor on a weaker yen offset weakness in chip-related stocks. The dollar was little changed. Gold gained as concerns over the Delta variant of COVID-19 boosted bullion's safe-haven appeal. Oil prices edged lower after OPEC+ ministers delayed their output policy meeting. International trade, durable goods and factory orders numbers are also due on the U.S. economic schedule.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Alphabet Inc: Workers identifying as "Black+" or "Latinx+" left Google at higher rates last year than in 2019, the company said in its latest annual diversity report on Thursday, highlighting a persistent challenge to growing representation. What Google calls an attrition index, with 100 as a baseline, registered at 121 last year for Black+ workers in the United States compared with 112 in 2020. For Latinx+ employees, it jumped to 105 last year from 97. Attrition soared to 146 from 110 for Black+ women, though it fell to 81 from 93 for Latinx+ women. For White+, attrition dropped to 112 from 117, falling across both men and women. Google declined to comment beyond its new report, which noted room for improvement in retaining underrepresented talent but added some new training and practices are showing promising results.

Chevron Corp: The company and its partners in the Gorgon LNG project off Western Australia have agreed to go ahead with a $4 billion project to improve gas recovery from offshore wells and keep the huge liquefied natural gas plant filled for 40 years. The Jansz-Io Compression (J-IC) project, which will help gas recovery at the Gorgon LNG project as the Jansz-Io field ages, is expected to take five years to complete, the U.S. oil major said. The J-IC project involves building a 27,000-tonne floating field control station, a subsea compression infrastructure and a 135-kilometre (84-mile) underwater power cable to Barrow Island, where the 15.6 million tonnes a year LNG plant is.

Credit Suisse Group AG: The Swiss bank is paying out a further $750 million to investors in its Greensill-linked supply chain finance funds, its asset management arm told investors. It has recovered some $6.1 billion of the $10 billion in funds backed by insolvent supply chain finance firm Greensill Capital, it said, a slight increase over the $5.9 billion through late May. The new repayments, planned for the week of July 5, will bring the total it has paid out to investors in the liquidation proceeds to $5.6 billion. Credit Suisse is focusing on some $2.3 billion in loans provided by Greensill to three single counterparties, the biggest of them Sanjeev Gupta's GFG Alliance, which are experiencing repayment issues.

Didi Global Inc: The Chinese ride-hailing company will be added to S&P Dow Jones' global equity indexes on July 12 following its U.S. stock market debut, the index publisher said. Didi shares will be added before the start of trade on July 12 "to eligible indices after qualifying for Fast Track IPO Entry as per methodology rules," S&P Dow Jones Indices said in an emailed statement, without elaborating. Index publisher FTSE Russell said earlier this week that Didi will be added to its global equity indexes on July 8. Didi shares jumped nearly 16% on Thursday, a day after its debut, the biggest U.S. listing by a Chinese company since 2014.

Exxon Mobil Corp: Union and company negotiators met on Wednesday to discuss the lockout of workers at Exxon Mobil’s Beaumont, Texas refinery, spokespeople for both sides said on Thursday. Exxon and United Steelworkers union (USW) representatives agreed to meet again next week, said Hoot Landry, international staff representative for the union, as the lockout of 650 workers reached nine weeks. Exxon locked out the workers represented by USW 12-243 on May 1, citing the risk of a strike. The USW has said the company’s last proposal requires its members to give up long-standing seniority and would create a separate contract for workers in a lube oil plant from that for workers in the refinery. Exxon has said the proposal would give it flexibility to be profitable in even low-margin environments.

Facebook Inc: The social media company said it is starting to warn some users they might have seen "extremist content" on the social media site. Screenshots shared on Twitter showed a notice asking "Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming an extremist?" and another that alerted users "you may have been exposed to harmful extremist content recently." Both included links to "get support." Facebook said the small test, which is only on its main platform, was running in the United States as a pilot for a global approach to prevent radicalization on the site. Separately, Facebook will provide money for an "innovation fund" for 170 regional Australian newspapers as part of a planned licensing deal, the parties said, calling the move a show of co-operation between the social media giant and local publishers.

GlaxoSmithKline PLC: GSK's board rejected Elliott's demands that the British company change its management and sell its consumer healthcare arm after separating it from its pharma business, a day after the activist investor's strongly worded proposals. "The Board strongly believes Emma Walmsley is the right leader of New GSK and fully supports the actions being taken by her and the management team," GSK said, adding that talks with its largest shareholders showed they were confident in GSK's strategy and leadership. In a letter to the GSK board, Elliott on Thursday said GSK should review its leadership and consider a sale of its consumer healthcare business as it confirmed its stake in the pharmaceuticals group.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc: Private equity firm EQT and Goldman Sachs' investment arm are in advanced talks to buy contract research company Parexel International Corp for nearly $9 billion including debt, the Wall Street Journal reported. The sale to EQT and Goldman could be completed this week, the report said on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. Parexel, which conducts clinical trials for drugmakers to make drug approval procedures easier, had drawn interest from both private equity and strategic bidders, the report said. Contract research organizations were hit last year as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted clinical trials, but they are now seeing a resurgence in demand as drugmakers and governments invest in newer treatments.

Johnson & Johnson: The company said late Thursday that its single-shot COVID-19 vaccine showed strong promise against the Delta variant and other emerging strains and also provided durable protection against the infection more broadly. Data showed that the durability of immune response for recipients of its vaccine lasted at least eight months, the healthcare company said, adding that its vaccine was 85% effective and could also help prevent hospitalization and death. Recipients of the vaccine produced strong neutralizing antibodies against all variants including the Delta, the U.S.-based company said.

Netflix Inc: The company has removed Australian spy drama "Pine Gap" from its services in Vietnam after a complaint from broadcast authorities in the Southeast Asian country about the appearance of a map which depicts Chinese claims in the South China Sea. The map, which briefly features on the screens of a control room at a spy base in two episodes of the six-part show, depicts China's unilaterally declared "nine-dash line" and is displayed within the context of maritime claims in the region. "Netflix's violations angered and hurt the feelings of the entire people of Vietnam," the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information said in a statement on its website. "This is the third time in a row in the last 12 months that Netflix has been found to distribute movies and TV shows containing content which violate Vietnam's sovereignty," said the statement, which was dated July 1.

Novavax Inc: Taiwan has chosen to get the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine via the COVAX global sharing scheme for lower income countries, the company said, which would add much needed additional shots to the island's immunisation programme. Taiwan's vaccine orders include 4.76 million doses from COVAX, though so far it has only received slightly more than 600,000 from the scheme, all AstraZeneca shots. Novavax, in an emailed statement, said it already had an agreement to supply its vaccine to the COVAX facility. "Taiwan has opted to receive doses of NVX-CoV2373 through COVAX," it said, referring to the vaccine's name and without giving details. Taiwan's health minister said this week the government had been in talks with Novavax, though also did not provide details in terms of numbers or a timeline.

Raytheon Technologies Corp: The aerospace maker said on Thursday it has been awarded an about $2 billion contract by the U.S. Air Force to develop and make a nuclear-armed cruise missile. The long-range standoff weapon (LRSO) will be manufactured in Tucson, Arizona, and is expected to be completed in February 2027, Raytheon said. It will replace the aging air-launched cruise missile that was fielded in the early 1980s with a 10-year design life. Bloomberg News earlier on Thursday reported that the Air Force plans to buy up to 1,000 LRSOs.

Tesla Inc: A Tesla Model S Plaid electric vehicle burst into flames on Tuesday while the owner was driving, just three days after the $129,900, top-of-the-range car was delivered following its June launch, an attorney for the driver told Reuters. The driver, identified as an "executive entrepreneur", was initially not able to get out of the car because its electronic door system failed, prompting the driver to "use force to push it open," Mark Geragos, of Geragos & Geragos, said. The car continued to move for about 35 feet to 40 feet (11 to 12 meters) before turning into a "fireball" in a residential area near the owner's Pennsylvania home.

Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc: Billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson will travel to the edge of space on Virgin Galactic's test flight on July 11, Branson's space tourism firm said on Thursday, beating out fellow aspiring billionaire astronaut Jeff Bezos. A successful flight by Branson aboard Virgin's VSS Unity spaceplane would mark a key milestone in a race to usher in a new era of private commercial space travel. It would also mean that Branson would travel beyond Earth's atmosphere ahead of Bezos, the founder of rival space tourism venture Blue Origin. The race, which also includes SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk, is underpinned by optimism that space travel will become mainstream as nascent technology is proven and costs fall, fueling what UBS estimates could be a $3 billion annual tourism market by 2030. Musk has not set a date for his space flight.

Xpeng Inc: The Chinese electric vehicle maker's American Depositary Receipts will be added to FTSE Russell's global equity indexes on July 8, the index publisher said. Xpeng shares will be included in the FTSE All-World Index, the FTSE Global Large Cap Index, and the FTSE Emerging Index, FTSE Russell said in a statement on its website. The announcement came after Guangzhou-based Xpeng said on Wednesday it would raise $1.8 billion in a Hong Kong dual primary listing to expand its product line-up and develop its technology. The company said on Thursday that it delivered 17,398 vehicles in the second quarter, a five-fold increase from a year earlier.
