BEFORE THE BELL

The Japanese yen rose against the dollar and spot gold rose due to their safe-haven appeal. Oil prices edged up. The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) readings for July are on the economic radar.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Results
Equinor ASA (EQNR). The energy firm reported a sharp drop in second-quarter operating profit that beat analysts' estimates, as strong performance by its refinery and trading unit countered impact of a coronavirus-led slump in oil and gas prices. The Norwegian oil and gas explorer posted an 89% slump in its adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to $0.35 billion in the April-June quarter, compared with $3.15 billion in the year-ago period. Equinor maintained a quarterly dividend of $0.09 per share. The company reiterated its goal of increasing output by 3% per year from 2019 to 2026, and kept capital spending plans for this year unchanged at $8.5 billion.
Intel Corp (INTC). The company said on Thursday its new 7-nanometer chip technology was six months behind schedule and it would consider farming out more work to outside semiconductor foundries, eroding a founding principle that manufacturing is key to its success. The company estimated third-quarter revenue of about $18.2 billion on adjusted earnings of $1.10 per share, compared with analysts' average forecast of $17.9 billion and $1.14 per share. It updated its full-year 2020 revenue guidance to $75 billion versus analysts' consensus estimate of $73.86 billion. For the second quarter ended in June, Intel said overall revenue and adjusted profits were $19.73 billion and $1.23 per share, compared with analysts' estimates of $18.55 billion and $1.11 per share.
Mattel Inc (MAT). The toymaker beat quarterly sales expectations on Thursday, as its North Americans customers splurged on Barbie dolls and Uno playing cards to keep their kids entertained during coronavirus-induced lockdowns. Mattel's net sales fell nearly 15% to $732.1 million, as the economic fallout of the health crisis hammered demand in overseas markets. That still beat analysts' average estimate of $678.5 million. Net loss widened to $109.2 million in the quarter ended June 30, from $108 million a year earlier. Overall gross Barbie sales increased 7% to $199.3 million in the second quarter.
Pearson PLC (PSO). The British education company said it has seen a rebound in demand since June and remains on track to hit its targets this year despite a loss in the first half. Pearson reported a loss of 23 million pounds for the first half to June 30 versus a profit of 144 million a year earlier. Analysts forecast an annual adjusted operating profit of 332 million pounds on revenue of 3.46 billion. Chairman Sidney Taurel also said the search for a replacement for CEO John Fallon, who is set to retire this year, was "well advanced".

In Other News
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (BABA). China's Alibaba is seizing on a new business opportunity thrown up by the novel coronavirus: helping foreign universities skirt China's stringent internet controls to keep classes going for their mainland Chinese students. Many Chinese students returned home after the virus prompted campuses to shut and have difficulty watching live-streamed tutorials or accessing class materials due to the so-called Great Firewall. University associations told Reuters that, soon after the virus started spreading globally, Alibaba's cloud division met with member institutions and pitched access to a network that could be established within 48 hours and act as a bridge between universities' portals and mainland Chinese students.
AstraZeneca PLC (AZN). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved AstraZeneca's drug to treat patients with a form of lung disease, the British drugmaker said. The drug Breztri Aerosphere is being approved as a maintenance treatment for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the third leading cause of death globally, AstraZeneca said. Breztri Aerosphere, which is a three-drug inhaler, is already approved in Japan and China for patients with COPD and is under regulatory review in the European Union, AstraZeneca said.
Citigroup Inc (C). Australian investigators who brought criminal cartel charges against Citigroup and Deutsche Bank "pre-populated" a witness statement with incriminating claims before interviewing the person who ultimately signed off on them, a court heard. Investigators wrote a statement which appeared to show a rival banker's concern about "inappropriate" co-ordination between the companies while they were working on a stock issue, then interviewed the witness and the passages re-appeared the witness's final signed statement, the court heard.
Comcast Corp (CMCSA). UK media company Sky, a unit of Comcast, said it will partner with TV measurement firm TVSquared to allow advertisers to track whether their ads lead to sales and website visits, in an effort to retain advertising dollars during a coronavirus-inspired slump. Sky and TVSquared said the partnership will let Sky's advertisers track in real-time whether their traditional TV and streaming video ads are attracting consumers' interest and therefore leading to more traffic on their websites. Previously, advertisers might wait weeks to see reports about how their commercials performed, said Calum Smeaton, chief executive of TVSquared.
Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS). Malaysia said the investment bank has agreed to a $3.9 billion settlement with the government over the multi-billion dollar 1MDB scandal. The deal includes a $2.5 billion cash payout by Goldman and a guarantee by the bank to return at least $1.4 billion in assets linked to 1MDB bonds, Malaysia's finance ministry said in a statement. The units of Goldman Sachs have pleaded not guilty to the charges. The U.S. Department of Justice has said around $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB.
Taro Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (TARO). The pharmaceutical company agreed to pay more than $200 million to settle allegations that it conspired to fix the prices of generic drugs, the Justice Department said on Thursday. Under the terms of a three-year deferred prosecution agreement, Taro will pay $205.7 million and agreed to cooperate in the department's ongoing investigation, the Justice Department said. Taro and other companies fixed prices and rigged bids for medications used to prevent and control seizures and treat bipolar disorder, pain and arthritis, and various skin conditions, the Justice Department said.
Walt Disney Co (DIS) & ViacomCBS Inc (VIACA). Disney on Thursday postponed the debut of its movie "Mulan" indefinitely, dealing a new blow to theater operators that were counting on the live-action epic to help attract audiences during a pandemic. Paramount Pictures also said "Top Gun: Maverick", the much-awaited sequel to the Tom Cruise-starring "Top Gun", has been delayed to July 2, 2021 from December 23, 2020. Disney also said it had delayed the next film installments from two of its biggest franchises, "Avatar" and "Star Wars," by one year as the novel coronavirus has disrupted production.
