Guy

Senate Democrats call for Trump administration to unveil details of TSMC plant deal
Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday urged the Trump administration to answer "serious questions" about Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's plans to build a U.S.-based $12 billion plant, flagging national security concerns and potentially undisclosed subsidies.

BEFORE THE BELL
U.S. stock index futures climbed, after a downbeat session on Wall Street in the previous day, on hopes of continued fiscal and monetary support. Most European shares pared losses, after falling earlier on doubts over a potential COVID-19 vaccine. China shares closed down, while Japanese stocks gained. The euro edged up, propelled by the Franco-German proposal for the common fund. The dollar was little changed against its peers. In commodities, oil rose on a drawdown in U.S. crude inventories and signs of firmer demand and safe-haven bets supported gold.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Results
Lowe's Cos Inc (LOW). The company beat quarterly estimates for same-store sales, as coronavirus lockdowns led people to spend more on tools and paint for home remodeling and repairs. Lowe's online sales surged 80% in the quarter, as customers flocked to its website since the company had to limit its operating hours and implement other social distancing measures at its stores to minimize the risk of the virus spreading. Excluding certain items, the company earned $1.77 per share, beating estimates of a profit of $1.32 per share. Lowe's same-store sales jumped 11.2%, while analysts were expecting only a 3.4% increase.
Target Corp (TGT). The company reported a 64% plunge in quarterly profit, pummeled by costs to tackle the coronavirus outbreak, even as panic-buying during the crisis lifted the big-box retailer's online and store sales. The company spent about $500 million in the first quarter to maintain safety measures at stores and to pay employees higher wages for working through the pandemic. Stay-at-home orders imposed to contain the virus powered a 141% jump in Target's online comparable sales, accounting for almost all of its same-store sales growth. The company's net earnings fell to $284 million from $795 million, a year earlier. On an adjusted basis, the company earned 59 cents per share. Revenue rose 11.3% to $19.37 billion, edging past expectations of $19.04 billion.
Urban Outfitters Inc (URBN). The apparel retailer on Tuesday projected a 60% decline in same-store sales in the second quarter due to tepid demand recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions. Urban Outfitters also reported worse-than-expected preliminary results for first-quarter, as its stores remained closed for about half of the quarter due to the coronavirus-led restrictions. Excluding items, the company recorded a loss of 77 cents per share, while analysts' had estimated a 29-cent loss.

In Other News
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (BABA). The company will invest $1.41 billion into an AI (artificial intelligence) and IoT (Internet of Things) system centered around its Tmall Genie smart speaker, the company announced. The money will be used to add more content to Tmall Genie, as well as develop proprietary technology, Alibaba said.
AstraZeneca Plc (AZN) & Merck & Co Inc (MRK). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved AstraZeneca and Merck’s Lynparza as a treatment for a form of prostate cancer, the companies said in a joint statement. The drug approval by the U.S. regulator is for treating patients with a form of prostate cancer that could not be held back by standard hormone therapy. The approval was based on results from a late-stage study where the drug reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 66% when compared with hormonal anticancer therapies such as enzalutamide or abiraterone.
Deutsche Bank AG (DB). The CEO said the bank needed to become more profitable before taking a leading role in European banking consolidation and dismissed concerns it would need state aid as it handles the fallout of the coronavirus outbreak. Chief Executive Officer Christian Sewing was speaking to shareholders at the bank's annual general meeting as he addressed questions about the bank's strategy. Asked by a shareholder about whether the bank could avoid resorting to state aid during the coronavirus crisis, Sewing said the bank was much stronger than a few years ago. "We are therefore well equipped to master the challenge that the current environment poses," said Sewing. "The question ... isn't applicable".
HSBC Holdings PLC (HSBC). The company expects to achieve double-digit asset growth in its newly combined wealth business in Asia Pacific in the next three years, as it looks to grab a bigger share of the growing rich population, the unit's regional head told Reuters. Aiming to become the top wealth manager in Asia Pacific in the medium-to-long-term, HSBC plans to sharpen its focus on clients with investable assets of over $1 million, said Greg Hingston, regional head of wealth and personal banking business. "With the combination, there is a big, big focus on family offices going forward. And it all fits within that focus around increasing penetration into the high and ultra-high networth segments," said Hingston, who took over the new role on April 1.
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ). The company on Tuesday announced it would stop selling its talc Baby Powder in the United States and Canada, saying demand had dropped in the wake of what it called "misinformation" about the product’s safety amid a barrage of legal challenges. J&J faces more than 19,000 lawsuits from consumers and their survivors claiming its talc products caused cancer due to contamination with asbestos, a known carcinogen. Many are pending before a U.S. district judge in New Jersey. J&J has faced intense scrutiny of the safety of its baby powder following an investigative report by Reuters in 2018 that found the company knew for decades that asbestos lurked in its talc.
Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT). The company said on Tuesday it will slow production of its stealthy F-35 fighter jets at its Texas facility, possibly delaying delivery of between 18 and 24 jets due to a parts shortage as the coronavirus hampers production across the jet's vast supply chain. Greg Ulmer, who runs Lockheed Martin's F-35 program, told Reuters in an interview that "we're going to slow the production rate down for about two to three months." Companies that make parts for the structural components of the jet aircraft are having to slow production due to the virus, Ulmer said. The company said in a statement it expects the financial impact "to be consistent with what we've reported previously," and that they will share any new information during the next earnings call.
Luckin Coffee Inc (LK). A company linked to China's scandal-hit Luckin Coffee is seeking fresh capital, sources said, highlighting the ripple effect of Luckin's fabricated transactions as the chairman of both firms scrambles to avoid a cash crunch. UCAR Inc, founded by Charles Zhengyao Lu, is looking to sell its limited partner (LP) interest worth $141 million in Chinese private equity firm Centurium Capital's yuan fund, people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The chauffeured car service provider, in which Lu is the biggest shareholder owning roughly 10%, has approached prospective investors for its 30.75% LP interest in UCAR Industrial Fund, managed by Centurium, said the people. Private equity fund investors are also known as LPs.
MGM Resorts International (MGM), Caesars Entertainment Corp (CZR) & Boyd Gaming Corp (BYD). The Las Vegas gaming industry will offer COVID-19 tests to employees before they return to work, the Culinary Union announced Tuesday, moving the hard-hit sector a step closer to reopening. MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and Boyd Gaming will participate in the testing plan. Testing is expected to begin on May 21 and will continue as employees return to work. It will be conducted at the Las Vegas Convention Center in partnership with the University Medical Center, a Las Vegas hospital.
Moderna Inc (MRNA). Data from a small, early-stage safety trial testing Moderna's experimental COVID-19 vaccine does not provide the critical data needed to assess its effectiveness, health-focused Stat News reported on Tuesday, citing experts. Stat quoted health experts saying that Moderna had not provided enough data in its news release to judge the vaccine candidate.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT). The company said on Tuesday comedian Joe Rogan's podcast will be available on the music streaming platform starting Sept. 1 and will become an exclusive later this year. Rogan's podcast, "The Joe Rogan Experience," is downloaded millions of times each month and is routinely featured among the top podcasts on Apple's charts. He has interviewed well-known politicians and businessmen on the show, including Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. The company did not disclose financial details of the multi-year agreement. The podcast will be free for all of the platform's users.

Wake-up call: Futures hoger, twijfels rondom vaccin en webinar leden

Goedemorgen
