BEFORE THE BELL
Wall Street futures were up as markets weighed risks from U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and the Fed’s comments on aggressive interest rate hikes. European shares edged up following mixed corporate earnings. In Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei ended higher as investors scooped up shares of firms that posted robust earnings, while China's stocks closed lower. The dollar edged down, and gold prices gained. Oil prices fell ahead of the OPEC+ meeting. S&P Global PMI, ISM non-manufacturing and durable goods data are scheduled for release later in the day.

STOCKS TO WATCH

Results
Advanced Micro Devices Inc: The company on Tuesday forecast third-quarter revenue slightly below Wall Street estimates, a signal of uncertainty that concerned some investors after the company stock made huge gains in July. AMD continued to show strong growth in the data center business, at the expense of its rival Intel, but the company cut its market forecast for personal computer sales and shares fell after hours. Adjusted earnings for the second quarter were $1.05 per share, topping analysts' estimates by 2 cents. AMD expanded its full-year forecast to a range of $26 billion to $26.6 billion, compared to about $26.3 billion earlier. Analysts had forecast $26.18 billion.

Airbnb Inc: The vacation rental on Tuesday forecast bookings for the current quarter at par with the record-breaking previous one, disappointing investors who had expected far more amid booming summer demand from pandemic-weary travelers. Average daily rates for Airbnb were up 1% to $164 in the quarter as the strong demand encouraged hosts to charge more. Airbnb expects current-quarter revenue between $2.78 billion and $2.88 billion, higher than analysts' estimates of $2.77 billion. It reported a net profit of 56 cents per share, ahead of estimates of 43 cents.

Chesapeake Energy Corp, Coterra Energy Inc & Pioneer Natural Resources Co: The U.S. shale producers on Tuesday reported strong second-quarter profits and boosted shareholder returns with higher dividends and buybacks. The three companies combined reported $4.84 billion in profits for the quarter. Chesapeake also said it will increase its outlays by 15% to between $1.75 billion and $1.95 billion, reflecting higher expenses and the addition of two drilling rigs. Pioneer said it was returning more than 95% of its $2.7 billion in second quarter free cash flow to shareholders.

CVS Health Corp: The company raised its annual profit forecast after strength in its insurance business and sales of COVID-19 over-the-counter test kits helped boost quarterly earnings. The company's retail and long-term care segment revenue rose 6.3% to $26.3 billion, as the sale of OTC antigen COVID test kits and the impact of the flu season helped offset the effect of lower COVID-19 vaccinations and diagnostic testing. Net income for the quarter ended June 30 rose to $2.96 billion, or $2.23 per share, from $2.79 billion, or $2.10 per share a year earlier. CVS raised its adjusted profit outlook to $8.40-$8.60 per share from $8.20-$8.40 per share forecast earlier.

Electronic Arts Inc: The company on Tuesday forecast quarterly adjusted sales below estimates as easing COVID-19 curbs temper the gaming rage seen at the height of the pandemic by unlocking other avenues for entertainment. First-quarter adjusted sales of $1.3 billion was lower than last year's, but still beat estimates thanks to the popular "FIFA" franchise and the recent "F1" launch. Excluding items, EA earned 47 cents per share, compared with Street estimates of 28 cents. The video game publisher behind "Apex Legends" expects second-quarter adjusted sales between $1.73 billion and $1.78 billion, compared with analysts' estimate of $1.87 billion.

General Motors Co & Livent Corp: General Motors is prepaying Livent $198 million for a guaranteed six-year supply of lithium, a deal that reflects the auto industry's rising worry about a tightening market for the electric vehicle battery metal. Prepaying cash for a guaranteed metal supply is unusual in the mining industry. Both companies announced the broad brushstrokes of the deal last week, but Livent announced financial terms on Tuesday as it posted a better-than-expected profit and raised its forecast for the year. Livent reported second-quarter net income of $60 million, or 31 cents per share, compared with $6.5 million, or 4 cents per share, a year ago. Excluding one-time items, Livent earned 37 cents per share. By that measure, analysts expected earnings of 29 cents per share.

Gilead Sciences Inc: The company on Tuesday said its second-quarter adjusted profit fell due to higher research and royalty costs as well as a downturn in sales of its COVID-19 antiviral drug Veklury. Quarterly revenue, however, rose 1% to $6.3 billion, which was ahead of the average Wall Street estimate of $5.85 billion. The biotech company said adjusted quarterly profit fell 13% to $1.58 per share, which also topped the average analyst estimate of $1.52. Net income fell to 91 cents per share from $1.21 per share.

Nomura Holdings Inc: The Japan's biggest brokerage and investment bank suffered a worse-than-expected slump in first-quarter net profit as volatile financial markets battered its investment banking and asset management businesses. April-June profit tumbled 96.5% from a year earlier to 1.696 billion yen, missing a 22.59 billion yen average of two analyst estimates. Investment banking revenue fell 33% from a year earlier as aggressive U.S. Federal Reserve interest rate rises and geopolitical tension rattled global financial markets and turned businesses cautious about stock and debt offerings.

Occidental Petroleum Corp: The company on Tuesday capped a turnaround with a second-quarter profit that topped Wall Street estimates while slashing debt and launching a share buyback program on the back of strong oil and gas prices. The energy company posted an adjusted profit of $3.2 billion, or $3.16 per share, topping the $3.07 per share estimated by analysts. The company said it spent $1.1 billion to buy back shares through Aug. 1.

PayPal Holdings Inc: The company said activist investor Elliott Management has an over $2 billion stake in the fintech company and the firm raised its annual profit guidance. PayPal shares shot up after it also announced a slew of moves including appointing Blake Jorgensen as new chief financial officer and a $15 billion repurchase program. The company reported a lower adjusted profit of 93 cents per share for the three months ended June 30, that comfortably beat estimates of 86 cents a share. Separately, PayPal has registered as an electronic systems operator in Indonesia and its customers can now access its services, the company said.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc: The company reported a 72.5% fall in quarterly profit, hurt by lacklustre sales of its COVID-19 antibody cocktail after the U.S. health regulator decided to limit its use earlier this year. The company recorded no sales from the COVID-19 antibody in the United States for the second consecutive quarter. Second-quarter revenue fell to $2.86 billion from $5.14 billion a year ago. The drugmaker's net profit fell to $852 million, or $7.47 per share, in the second quarter ended June 30, compared with $3.1 billion, or $27.97 per share, a year earlier.

Robinhood Markets Inc: The company said it was slashing 23% of its staff as it posted a 44% decline in revenue on slumping trading activity, in an earnings announcement that came a day earlier than scheduled and beat analyst expectations. The brokerage posted net revenue for the second quarter of $318 million as revenue from equity, options and crypto trading more than halved, compared with $565 million a year earlier, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company said it would commence another round of layoffs affecting 780 employees, on top of the 9% of full-time staff laid off earlier this year. It will also change its organizational structure to drive greater cost discipline.

Starbucks Corp: the company beat Wall Street estimates for quarterly profit on Tuesday as higher prices and strong demand for its coffees in the United States helped offset a hit to business in China from renewed COVID-19 lockdowns. The Seattle-based chain earned 84 cents per share on an adjusted basis, beating estimates of 75 cents. Total net revenue rose to $8.15 billion from $7.5 billion a year earlier, edging past analysts' average estimate of $8.11 billion.

In Other News
Bank of America Corp & JPMorgan Chase & Co: L'ATTITUDE Ventures closed its first institutional fund raising over $100 million with an anchor investment from Wall Street giant JPMorgan and initial investments from Trujillo Group and Bank of America. The fund which intends to invest in early-stage companies that are either founded or run by Latino entrepreneurs also had investments from Barclays, the Royal Bank of Canada and Cisco, among others. "(The investment) reinforces our ongoing efforts to address the persistent gap in access to growth capital and open more doors for emerging companies led by diverse entrepreneurs," said Bank of America's Chief Executive Brian Moynihan in a statement.

Boeing Co: The company’s defense workers in the St. Louis area are set to vote on the company's revised contract offer after they canceled a strike that had been set to start Monday. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) said Saturday an overnight bargaining session had led to the new Boeing offer. The union represents about 2,500 employees at the three plants. Under the new contract offer, employees can opt to receive an $8,000 lump sum payment - minus tax withholdings - upon ratification or can choose to have the entire amount deposited in a 401(k) plan. The company is dropping its revised 401(k) match proposal.

Nikola Corp: The company said on Tuesday it received investors' approval to increase the number of authorized shares of the electric vehicle maker to 800 million from 600 million. More than 66% of votes were cast in favor of the proposal at the company's shareholder meeting on Tuesday, Nikola said. The meeting, which was earlier adjured three times, follows disagreement between Chairman Stephen Girsky and founder and former Chief Executive and Chairman Trevor Milton, with Girsky in favor of issuing new shares.

NortonLifeLock Inc: The company's $8.6 billion purchase of rival Avast won provisional clearance from Britain, overcoming the final hurdle to creating a consumer security software giant and sending Avast shares to an all-time high. The deal, which would combine NortonLifeLock's strength in identity theft protection and Avast's privacy credentials, has already received the green light in the United States, Spain and Germany. Following a more detailed Phase 2 investigation, the CMA said it had concluded that the deal does not raise competition concerns in the UK.

Uber Technologies Inc: The company sold its 7.8% stake in Indian food delivery firmZomato for $392 million via a block trade on local exchanges, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The deal was executed at 50.44 rupees per share, they said. Zomato and Uber did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters reported on Tuesday the offer size of the block deal was set to be 612 million shares, according to its term sheet, which did not disclose the seller. As per Reuters calculations, the stake sale by Uber was worth 30.87 billion rupees.

UnitedHealth Group Inc: The top U.S. healthcare company by market capitalization, is struggling to sell Brazilian unit Amil due to antitrust issues and growing losses from individual health plans, according to four people with knowledge of the matter. After studying ways to divest Amil 10 years after acquiring it, UnitedHealth decided last month to suspend the sale process, the sources said, asking for anonymity because the discussions were private. UnitedHealth had agreed to pay acquirers for Amil's loss-making units and lose money on the sale of the whole company, but did not receive an attractive proposal, the sources added.

Twitter Inc: The company is attempting to find evidence that Elon Musk tried to torpedo the financing of his $44 billion takeover deal for the social media company while also looking into his motivation for backing out of the deal, legal experts said. Twitter sent dozens of civil subpoenas this week to global banks such as units of Morgan Stanley, co-investors in the deal including an affiliate of Brookfield Asset Management, and Musk advisers, according to filings over the past two days in the Delaware Court of Chancery. The subpoenas seek documents and communications concerning the deal, its financing, any information on "bot," or fake, Twitter accounts. They also seek information that the recipients may have about potential impact on the deal from changes in the stock price of electric car maker Tesla, of which Musk is chief executive.

Dow Jones kent slechte dag, de Nasdaq blijft sterk liggen

Goedemorgen,
