BEFORE THE BELL
Most global stocks steadied, supported by stronger U.S. equity futures and a decline in U.S. bond yields. In Europe, stocks extended gains after posting their best session in four months a day earlier. In volatile trading in Asia, the Shanghai Composite index stood on the precipice of a correction amid fears of policy tightening. Gains in consumer goods companies and property developers supported Japanese stocks. Oil rose as investors focused on prospects for tighter supply due to extended OPEC+ output curbs. Gold rose as it gained some respite from a retreat in the dollar.
STOCKS TO WATCH
Results
Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd: The company posted a surprise rise in quarterly profit on Monday, helped by increased production of copper and gold at its Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia. The results come a week after Chief Executive Officer Ulf Quellmann resigned amid a protracted dispute between the company and its top shareholder, Rio Tinto, over funding for the underground expansion of the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine. Turquoise on Monday also cut its 2021 capital expenditure outlook for the open-pit mine to between $110 million and $140 million from a prior range of about $120 million to $160 million, to reflect the deferral of certain non-critical projects. Rio Tinto-controlled Turquoise said income attributable to owners of the company was $159.9 million, or 79 cents per share, for the three months ended Dec. 31, compared with $113.1 million, or 56 cents per share, a year earlier. Analysts on average were expecting profit to fall to 41 cents per share.
Deals of the Day
Eni Spa: The company said it had reached an agreement to sell its assets in Pakistan to Prime International Oil&Gas Company, to further its plans to sell non-core businesses and simplify the company's portfolio. Prime International is a new company formed by former local employees of the oil and gas group and Hub Power Company Ltd, the largest Independent Pakistani Power Producer, the statement said. The group did not give financial details of the deal, which comes at a time when the sale of oil and gas assets is becoming harder as the energy transition picks up. Eni had also put on sale its Australian gas assets, valued at around $1 billion, but failed to attract satisfactory bids.
In Other News
Apple Inc: France Digitale will file a complaint against the iPhone maker with data privacy watchdog CNIL over alleged breaches of European Union rules, France's leading startup lobby said in a statement. In the seven-page complaint seen by Reuters, the lobby, which represents the bulk of France's digital entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, alleges Apple's latest operating software, iOS 14, does not comply with EU privacy requirements. "The allegations in the complaint are patently false and will be seen for what they are, a poor attempt by those who track users to distract from their own actions and mislead regulators and policymakers," Apple said in a written statement.
AstraZeneca Plc: Indonesia has approved the company's COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, Penny K. Lukito, the chief of the country's food and drug agency, told a news conference on Tuesday. More than one million doses of the vaccine arrived late on Monday via the COVAX global vaccine-alliance scheme.
Autohome Inc: The company is set to raise $688 million by pricing its shares at $22.71 each in its Hong Kong listing after its U.S. stock dropped by 12.5% on Monday, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter. The online vehicle firm sold 30.29 million shares as part of the transaction. The sources declined to be identified as the information was not yet made public. Autohome did not respond to a request for comment. Autohome has the option of selling an extra 4.54 million shares as part of a so-called greenshoe option to increase the size of its fundraising.
Banco Santander SA: A Madrid court announced the suspension of a court hearing that was due to take place on Wednesday between Italian banker Andrea Orcel and Santander as the judge handling the case had to quarantine after being in touch with a COVID-19 case. The judge, Javier Sanchez Beltran, had been in contact with a direct relative who had tested positive for COVID-19, and has to self-quarantine for health reasons, the court said. In the coming days, the court is expected to inform about a new date for the hearing.
BioNTech SE & Pfizer Inc: The COVID-19 vaccine was able to neutralize a new variant of the coronavirus spreading rapidly in Brazil, according to a laboratory study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Monday. Blood taken from people who had been given the vaccine neutralized an engineered version of the virus that contained the same mutations carried on the spike portion of the highly contagious P.1 variant first identified in Brazil, the study conducted by scientists from the companies and the University of Texas Medical Branch found. The scientists said the neutralizing ability was roughly equivalent the vaccine's effect on a previous less contagious version of the virus from last year. Pfizer has said it believes its current vaccine is highly likely to still protect against the South African variant. Seperately, Japan's Terumo Corp said it has developed a new syringe that can get seven doses out of each vial of COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer, at least one more than accessible with existing syringes.
Diamondback Energy Inc & QEP Resources Inc: QEP Resources Inc shareholder Glazer Capital LLC rejected Diamondback Energy's proposed acquisition of QEP, calling the deal value "materially inadequate." In a statement, Glazer Capital argues that QEP has not benefited from the recent rally in U.S. crude prices to the same extent as other small-cap producers, as its share price has been tethered to the larger Diamondback's stock by the exchange agreement. Year-to-date, QEP and Diamondback shares have risen 82% and 74% respectively. This has boosted QEP's market value to $1.1 billion, while Diamondback is worth $13.3 billion.
Facebook Inc: The company said on Monday it was testing a feature on Instagram that allows some content creators in India to share short video clips, known as reels, on their Facebook accounts. In the test, some Indian users who create the 30-second long reels on Instagram will have the option of having them recommended on Facebook. Additionally, the social media giant said it will have its own version of the reels feature on the main app. "In India, we're testing the ability for Instagram creators to choose to have their Reels recommended on Facebook... creators can reach new audiences and people can create and discover more entertaining content," a Facebook spokeswoman told Reuters.
GameStop Corp: The shares of the company jumped for the fifth day running, as news on the video retailer's e-commerce strategy and speculation that small investors will pour stimulus checks into markets showed signs of reheating January's "meme" stocks boom. GameStop shares were up 15.1% to $223.70 premarket, a day after the company tasked Chewy co-founder Ryan Cohen -- a major GameStop shareholder and board member -- with spearheading the company's online sales efforts. In Frankfurt, GameStop was trading about 24% higher and were the second-most traded stock on trading platform Lang & Swartz after Siemens AG.
Gap Inc: The apparel retailer is weighing options including a potential sale of its China business, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing people with knowledge of the matter. The report said the Old Navy parent was working with an adviser to explore its options and has contacted prospective suitors. It added there was a possibility that Gap could also keep the business. The company, owner of Banana Republic and Athleta brands, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Gap's Asian market accounts for about 5% of its overall net sales, according to its latest regulatory filing.
Goldman Sachs Group Inc & Royal Dutch Shell Plc: Japanese renewables group JRE has been put up for sale by its owners, including Goldman Sachs, three people familiar with the matter said, a deal expected to draw interest from European firms eager to enter Japan's green power market. Interest is expected to come from large European energy players, including the continent's third-largest renewables firm RWE as well as oil major Shell, which plans to aggressively expand in solar and wind, the people said. Shell and Goldman Sachs declined to comment. GIC and JRE were not immediately available for comment.
Li Auto Inc, Nio Inc & Xpeng Inc: The U.S.-listed Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers plan to list in Hong Kong as soon as this year, to tap an investor base closer to home, said three people with direct knowledge of the matter. The trio each aim to sell at least 5% of their enlarged share capital in the Asian finiancial hub, the people said. Based on their New York market capitalisation on Monday, proceeds could total around $5 billion. The EV makers have been working with advisors on the sales which could begin as early as mid-year, one of the people said. Li Auto, Nio and Xpeng declined to comment.
MoneyGram International Inc: Blockchain payment firm Ripple will end partnership with the money transfer services company, the companies said on Monday. They did not specify the reason behind the decision to terminate the agreement, but Ripple Chief Executive Officer Brad Garlinghouse said in a Twitter post that the companies were committed to revisiting the partnership in future. MoneyGram, which stopped transacting under its commercial agreement with Ripple in early December, said in a regulatory filing it will not receive any market development fees in 2021.
Nomura Holdings Inc: Japan's government picked Junko Nakagawa, the first female CEO of Nomura Asset Management, to join the central bank's fragmented nine-member board that faces the challenge of tackling the side-effects of prolonged monetary easing. The 55-year-old banker would replace Takako Masai, who has consistently voted with the majority of the board while calling for more debate on the rising cost of prolonged monetary easing. Officials at Nomura Asset Management, a unit of the company, declined to comment on the nomination, saying they have nothing to say about the matter.
Novartis AG: The company said its drug canakinumab (ACZ885) did not meet the primary endpoint of overall survival in patients with advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer in a Phase III study, but other late-stage trials are ongoing. The Phase III CANOPY-2 study was evaluating canakinumab in combination with the chemotherapy agent docetaxel in 237 adults with non-small cell lung cancer whose disease progressed while on or after previous platinum-based chemotherapy and PD-(L)1 inhibitor immunotherapy, the Swiss drugmaker said in a statement. The canakinumab development program continues with two Phase III non-small cell lung cancer clinical trials ongoing in first-line and adjuvant settings, Novartis said. Findings will be presented at an upcoming medical meeting.
Rio Tinto Plc: Two small groups of Rio Tinto shareholders proposed resolutions for the mining giant to disclose emission targets and review its association with lobby groups, the company said. One group, representing 0.02% of shares, proposed that Rio disclose short, medium and long-term targets for direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions and chalk out its performance against those targets, according to the proposed resolution. A second group, representing 0.01% of Rio shares, asked the company to undertake an annual review of industry lobbyists to identify inconsistencies with the 2015 Paris Agreement and suspend membership of those out of line with the objectives. "Where our membership is significant, we will work in partnership with industry associations to ensure that their policy positions and advocacy are consistent with our own public position and the Paris Agreement," Rio said in a statement.
Royal Dutch Shell Plc: The company's Egypt unit has entered into an agreement to sell upstream assets in Egypt's Western Desert to Cheiron Petroleum Corporation and Cairn Energy Plc for up to $926 million, the company said. The deal includes Shell Egypt's stake in 13 onshore concessions and its share in the Badr El-Din Petroleum Company (BAPETCO). It is subject to government and regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2021, the statement said. "It will enable Shell to concentrate on its offshore exploration and integrated value chain in Egypt, including seven new blocks in the Nile Delta, West Mediterranean and Red Sea," the company said.
Vodafone Group Plc: The company said it would seek to raise up to $3.32 billion in proceeds by floating infrastructure unit Vantage Towers in Europe's largest initial public offering of 2021. The base offer size is 2 billion euros, but there is flexibility to increase it to 2.8 billion euros through an "upsize" option and an over-allotment option for lead managers on the deal, Vodafone said. The free float on the base offer size would be 19.1%, according to a bookrunner, rising to 24.6% should the increased offer be placed.
Zoom Video Communications Inc: The video-conferencing platform founder Eric Yuan transferred about 18 million shares worth over $6 billion last week, according to a regulatory filing. The transfers were related to Yuan's estate planning practices, a Zoom spokesperson said. "The distributions were made in accordance with the terms of Eric Yuan and his wife's trusts." Yuan, who is also the chief executive officer of the company, transferred roughly 40% of his stake in the company to unspecified beneficiaries, Zoom disclosed in a filing late on Friday. The transfers were done in two tranches of about 9 million shares each and were shown as gifts, according to the filing.

Goedemorgen

Stijgende rente op US obligaties:
Verder valt het verloop van de rente en dus ook de valutamarkt op, de 10- en 30-jaars rente blijven dicht bij hun hoogste stand van gisteren hangen. Blijf het verloop van de rente in de gaten houden, dat kan zeker nog een tijdje voor onrust zorgen.
De hogere rentes zorgen ervoor dat de daling vooral opvalt bij de TOP- technologie aandelen, die gaan nu al een tijdje in de uitverkoop en dat merken we duidelijk aan het verloop van de tech indices.
