Twitter locks account of China's U.S. embassy over its defence of Xinjiang policy
Twitter has locked the account of China's U.S. embassy for a tweet that defended China's policy towards Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang, which the U.S. social media platform said violated its stand against "dehumanizing" people.

Jack Ma's reappearance fails to soothe all investor concerns
Jack Ma's 50-second video reappearance may have buoyed Alibaba Group's shares, yet it has done little to resolve the Chinese e-commerce giant's troubled relationship with regulators that is making some investors hesitate about owning its stock.

BEFORE THE BELL
U.S. stock futures rose, and the dollar fell as investors placed bets on a major stimulus from the U.S. President Joe Biden. European shares rose ahead of European Central Bank's policy meeting. Japan's Nikkei took cues from Wall Street’s overnight rally and ended at a 30-year high. Unexpected rise in U.S. inventories dragged oil prices. Gold steadied. Initial jobless claims data and building permit numbers are due for release later in the day.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Results
Kinder Morgan Inc: The pipeline operator on Wednesday raised concerns over the pace of ramp-up in spending in top U.S. shale basins following a rebound in oil prices after beating Wall Street estimates for quarterly results. The company, which transports nearly 40% of the natural gas consumed in the United States, said natgas shipment volumes rose more than 6% sequentially, while total refined product volumes fell marginally. Excluding items, Kinder Morgan earned 27 cents per share, versus estimates of 24 cents, according to Refinitiv IBES data. Revenue also rose sequentially to $3.12 billion, above analysts' estimates of $3.05 billion.

United Airlines Holdings Inc: The airlines said on Wednesday it aims to cut about $2 billion of annual costs through 2023 as it charts a recovery from the coronavirus pandemic that drove its fourth straight quarterly loss. United's adjusted net loss was $2.1 billion, or a loss of $7 per share, in the fourth quarter, compared with a profit of $676 million a year earlier. That missed analysts' estimates for a loss of $6.60 per share, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. The company said 2021 would be a "transition year that's focused on preparing for a recovery." Its shares fell 2% in after-hours trading. United is set to receive about $2.6 billion in payroll support through March and said it expects to offer employees options like voluntary leaves to reduce furloughs after that time.

In Other News
Alphabet Inc: In a first in Europe, Google and a group of French publishers said they had agreed a general framework over copyrights under which the U.S. tech giant will pay publishers for content online. The principles agreed between the French publishers' lobby, Alliance de la presse d'information générale (APIG), and Google include criteria such as the daily volume of publications, monthly internet traffic and "contribution to political and general information," they said in a statement. Google and APIG did not say how much money could be distributed under the agreement to APIG members, which include national and local publishers. Details on how the remuneration would be calculated under the criteria were not disclosed.

BlackRock Inc: The company is adding bitcoin futures as an eligible investment to two funds, a company filing showed, in a move to bring the world of cryptocurrency to its clients. The asset manager said it could use bitcoin derivatives for its funds BlackRock Strategic Income Opportunities and BlackRock Global Allocation Fund. The funds will invest only in cash-settled bitcoin futures traded on commodity exchanges registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the company said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday.

Corteva Inc: Starboard LP is planning to take control of the agricultural company's board and replace its Chief Executive Officer Jim Collins, the Wall Street Journal reported late on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The activist investor has privately nominated eight directors to Corteva's 12-person board, the Journal reported, adding that Starboard is aiming to oust Collins over 'mediocre performance'. The activist investor, which held a roughly 1.6% stake as on October 2020 in Corteva, has been in on-and-off talks with the company since the fall and nominated board members before the deadline to do so in late December, the newspaper reported citing the sources.

China Mobile Ltd & China Telecom Corp & China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd: The telecom companies said they had requested the New York Stock Exchange to review its decision to delist their American depositary shares. The U.S. investment ban has triggered a wider fallout for the companies, with U.S. investors quickly selling off their stakes and index providers cutting them from their benchmarks. The companies said the NYSE's review would be scheduled within 25 days from their filing on Wednesday and requested that trading suspension on the telcos stay in place until the outcome is finalised.

Facebook Inc: The company’s executives will field questions from an Indian parliamentary panel about the changes to WhatsApp's privacy, a source said, days after the messaging platform was asked by the country's technology ministry to withdraw them. The messaging platform earlier this month kicked off a storm when it informed users it was preparing a new privacy policy, under which it could share limited user data, including phone number and location, with Facebook and its group firms. The panel will ask why Facebook needed to change WhatsApp's privacy policy and how it will impact users, the source said.

McKesson Corp & Moderna Inc: McKesson will replace some Moderna COVID-19 vaccines in the United States after they arrived colder than the low end of the required temperature range, the company said on Wednesday. The company, which is the U.S. distributor of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccines, said some of the gel packs used to maintain appropriate temperatures during shipping on Sunday were too cold and it also impacted some shipments slated for Monday. McKesson, which did not provide the number of doses affected by the temperature issue, said it had not shipped the vaccines and would replace them within the next 24 hours.

Tesla Inc: The company's vehicle registrations in the U.S. state of California jumped nearly 63% during the fourth quarter compared with last year, largely due to the success of the company's Model Y, according to data from Cross-Sell, a research firm that collates title and registration data. The report released on Wednesday showed registrations in California, a bellwether for the electric carmaker and its largest U.S. market, recovered from a third-quarter low of about 16,200 vehicles to around 22,117 vehicles in the fourth quarter. Total fourth-quarter vehicle registrations in the 23 states, where data was collected, stood at 44,749, with Model Y accounting for nearly half the registrations.

Twitter Inc: The company has locked the account of China's U.S. embassy for a tweet that defended China's policy towards Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang, which the U.S. social media platform said violated its stand against "dehumanizing" people. China's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that it was confused by the move and that it was the embassy's responsibility to call out disinformation and clarify the truth. The Chinese Embassy account, @ChineseEmbinUS, posted a tweet this month that said that Uighur women had been emancipated and were no longer "baby-making machines", citing a study reported by state-backed newspaper China Daily. The tweet was removed by Twitter and replaced by a label stating that it was no longer available. Although Twitter hides tweets that violate its policies, it requires account owners to manually delete such posts. The Chinese embassy's account has not posted any new tweets since Jan. 9.

INSIGHTYellen's call to 'act big' reflects long re-think on big government debt
At U.S. Treasury Secretary-designate Janet Yellen's confirmation hearing Tuesday she nodded to the need for the federal debt to be put on a "sustainable" path, at least eventually. Her more extensive comments defending President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus spending plan, however, reflected a steady shift in economists' thinking about the mountains of government debt across the developed world that has been underway for a decade and has roots in the near collapse of the euro zone.

Maxar Technologies Inc: JPMorgan cuts rating to neutral from overweight, saying the company's fundamental growth prospects require much improvement.

Wake-up call: Nasdaq extreem, andere indices boven in de WIG

Goedemorgen
