End of an era? Series of U.S. setbacks bodes ill for big oil, gas pipeline projects
A rapid-fire succession of setbacks for big energy pipelines in the United States this week has revealed an uncomfortable truth for the oil and gas industry: environmental activists and landowners opposed to projects have become good at blocking them in court.

BEFORE THE BELL
Wall Street futures wobbled in choppy trading and global share markets faltered, as surging coronavirus infections threatened a recovery in the global economy. Gold prices breached $1,800 an ounce for the first time since 2011 as mounting fears over the fast spread of the coronavirus sent investors scurrying for safe havens and the dollar edged higher. U.S. crude futures were slightly lower on demand concerns. Consumer credit data for May is scheduled for release later in the day.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Results
Levi Strauss & Co (LEVI). The company on Tuesday cautioned its business would be hit in the second half of the year, even as the denim apparel maker's sales have been improving at its reopened stores, following government-mandated COVID-19 lockdowns. The company also said it would cut about 700 positions, or roughly 15% of its workforce, in non-retail, non-manufacturing segments that would help it save $100 million annually. Levi added that weekly sales performance in company-operated stores was improving sequentially, as productivity in the final week of June reached 80% compared to a year earlier. Net revenue in the second quarter fell 62% to $497.5 million, but beat analysts' expectations of $485.5 million.

Deals Of The Day
Allstate Corp (ALL) & National General Holdings Corp (NGHC). Allstate said on Tuesday it will buy National General Holdings Corp for about $4 billion in cash, scaling up its auto insurance business at a time when the coronavirus has crushed traffic on roads and reduced claims. National General's shareholders will receive $32 per share in cash and closing dividends of $2.50 per share for each share held. Allstate said the deal is expected to close in early 2021 and will add to its adjusted earnings per share and return-on-equity beginning the first year.

In Other News
Amazon.com Inc (AMZN). The company has invested $308.02 million in Amazon Seller Services, an Indian unit, strengthening the business at a time when more people shop online in a bid to avoid crowded public places. Amazon Singapore made a significant portion of financing, data from business intelligence firm Tofler showed. As India went into lockdown, Amazon encouraged small shops to join as sellers on its platform in a bid to boost local businesses and expand its reach.
AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (AMC) & Cinemark Holdings Inc (CNK). Six movie theater chains, including AMC, Cinemark and Regal Cinemas, have sued New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy for refusing to let them resume operations, even after allowing churches, retailers and indoor shopping malls to reopen during the coronavirus pandemic. The lawsuit filed late Monday in the federal court in Trenton, the state capital, said Murphy's failure to even set a timetable for theater reopenings, while letting comparable "places of public assembly" open their doors, violated the chains' constitutional rights to free speech and due process.
AstraZeneca Plc (AZN) & Merck & Co Inc (MRK). The companies said their blockbuster cancer treatment Lynparza won approval in the European Union for treating patients with a form of pancreatic cancer. Lynparza, which can now be used to treat patients with a form of BRCA-mutated metastatic pancreatic cancer, leads a class of drugs known as PARP inhibitors that stop cancer cells from repairing themselves after being damaged by chemotherapy.
Boeing Co (BA). The airplane maker has reached settlement agreements in more than 90% of the wrongful death claims filed in federal court after the 2018 crash of a Lion Air 737 MAX in Indonesia that killed all 189 people on board, a court filing on Tuesday said. In a filing in federal court in Chicago, Boeing said claims relating to 171 of the 189 people on board the crashed jet have been fully or partially settled.
Facebook Inc (FB). Organizers of a growing Facebook advertising boycott said they saw "no commitment to action" after meeting with Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Free Press, Color of Change and the NAACP met for over an hour via video conference with Facebook executives including Zuckerberg and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg to discuss the groups' demands. Separately, the New York Times reported Facebook has not done enough to fight discrimination on its platform and some of its decisions were setbacks for civil rights, according to an independent audit commissioned by the company. Meanwhile, Germany is determined to expand its attempts to regulate online hate speech even as Facebook promises to do more to clean up its site after a global advertiser boycott, with politicians saying the issue is too important to leave to self-regulation.
Nokia Oyj (NOK) & Verizon Communications Inc (VZ). Shares in the company fell on concerns that the Finnish company was losing the business of its key client Verizon in the United States. Overnight, JP Morgan downgraded Nokia to "neutral" from "overweight", citing a potential loss of business with Verizon. "We believe that there is a real risk Verizon will depend less on Nokia as their primary RAN (radio access network) supplier going forward," JPM said in a note, adding there were signs Verizon was using Samsung.
Vivint Solar Inc (VSLR) & Sunrun Inc (RUN). With its $1.5 billion acquisition of smaller rival Vivint Solar and Sunrun is creating a residential solar behemoth that it hopes will bring down the cost of going solar, accelerate adoption of home batteries and expand the technology to more U.S. homes, analysts said on Tuesday. The deal, announced late on Monday, combines two of the five biggest U.S. residential solar companies at a time when the industry is struggling with sharply weaker demand due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Walt Disney Co (DIS). The company will stick to its plans to reopen its Walt Disney World theme parks in Orlando, Florida, to a limited number of guests on Saturday, it said in a statement on Tuesday. Some workers have signed a petition asking Disney to delay Walt Disney World's reopening. The resort, home to the world's most-visited theme parks, was closed to guests in March. In a statement on Tuesday, Disney's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Pamela Hymel, said new requirements from temperature checks, to face coverings and extra sanitation would enable guests to enjoy Disney World "responsibly."

Coronavirus 'collateral damage' hits U.S. rural power providers
When the coronavirus pandemic left Ron Mueller without a market for the 3,200 piglets his hog breeding operation cranks out weekly and facing huge bills, his local electricity provider offered to cut the Illinois farmer some slack. Eastern Illini Electric Cooperative (EIEC), which powers Mueller's farm and serves farmers, small businesses and residents across 10 rural counties, was willing to delay his bills as he scrambled to make ends meet.

Blackstone Group Inc (BX). Jefferies raises target price to $64 from $56, believing traditional and real estate private equity markets recover faster than anticipated driving with a return to attractive exit multiples.
Citigroup Inc (C). JPMorgan raises target price to $57 from $56.5, rating Citigroup overweight relative to peers due to its improvement in efficiency ratio and attractive valuation.
HubSpot Inc (HUBS). Mizuho cuts rating to neutral from buy, believing near-term headwinds should drive a sharp deceleration in revenue growth.
Wells Fargo & Co (WFC). JPMorgan cuts target price to $29.5 from $32, citing uncertainty and political risk from several ongoing investigations into its various scandals, higher expense run rate, slower revenue growth and uncertainty related to potential changes by new CEO.

Wake-up call: Lagere opening na daling gisteren

Goedemorgen
